Are AeroCool PSUs as bad as people make them out to be?

Hi, I have recently received a PC with an AeroCool PSU and was looking to upgrade the GPU (Currently running a GTX 1060 6GB which requires one 6+2pin) however am looking to upgrade to a more powerful therefore power hungry GPU. The PSU itself is "700W" however from its weight doesn't feel to be that of a 700W unit so I am thinking to upgrade it.

Just would like to ask before hand if anyone has had bad experiences with AeroCool PSUs before and what was people's opinions about them as I wouldn't like to pass the PSU onto new PC knowing its not very safe.

    Cheers

PSU's can well be overlooked, you really should look to get a good quality unit even if its a lot more than a cheaper PSU. I have had an aerocool fail in the past and also one that has been ok but I wouldn't run a expensive GPU on it. And I would take the peak power numbers with a pinch of salt.

Get yourself a decent PSU and it will last years

AFAIK,some are OK,others not so much. However, there have been lots of deals on PSUs from Corsair, etc - it makes me wonder whether the GPU stock problems have lead to a glut of PSUs at retail?!

Thank you for the response, I was looking at EVGA SuperNova PSU which is 750W and I believe can actually supply 750W consistently. I am thinking to also go fully modular as currently this AeroCool PSU is non-modular so has a tone of extra cables taking up room in my HDD bay so hopefully I can relieve some room in my case.

    Cheers

I had the Supernova G2 previously and was an excellent PSU.

The G2 OEM is SuperFlower, so no surprise.

To the OP: with EVGA it is important to state the whole model number as they keep swapping OEM all the time.

For the Supernova 750W the OEM could be FSP, Superflower or HEC according the Realhardtechx database:
    http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_a...s/Page2293.htm
(Seems EVGA never bought any 750W from Seasonic, if they had it would be the 750 GS or similar).

Superflower or Seadonic are very good, FSP or HEC far less so.

Hi, I was looking at the EVGA SuperNova G3 as it seems to be very good quality and a more compact unit itself, which is perfect for my case.

Indeed it is Superflower, I was aware of that before I bought it. I always like to check out Jonny Guru before buying psu's however their site has been down for a very long time now and not sure if its coming back :/

G3 is Superflower so should be a very good supply. 150mm depth is handy too.
That PSU database entry only lists a JohnnyGuru review, but like Jonj1611 points out that site is down most likely never to return
    Here's a different review:

Ordered one a few days ago and have it running happily in my PC now, next step is the GPU if I can get a hold of one

Re: Are AeroCool PSUs as bad as people make them out to be?

I have a PC which has been using AERO BRONZE 750W for years with no problems, it has 744w on the 12v rail which is a good sign and weights around what I would expect (I have removed many dead cheap psus which were much lighter while fixing PCs). I looked up detailed reviews before hand it all was good on components and build quality.

The PC is an FX8320, R9 290, 16GB ram, 2 HDs and an SSD, overall a system which can push 600-650w

In summary I got it as it was spare parts budget PC I was putting together, I wouldn't have bought one for my main system as I would go with the above and spend a little more.

So I would say an excellent good quality budget PSU,much better than the really cheap ebay PSUS and does seem to actually run to what it says on the side/box.

Re: Are AeroCool PSUs as bad as people make them out to be?

While noting it's an oldish thread, my general approach to PSUs is that it is not a good place, an indeed probably the worst place in a PC, to go cheap. If something goes wrong with it, or if it just doesn't have good protection, it can cause a LOT of damage to other bits, some of which can be very expensive .... like the £1200 graphics card one cooked when a naff PSU blew in a loan (review) PC, about 20 years ago. It also took out quite an expensive RAID board and four Seagate hard drives. And my office stank og it all for weeks.

I've never used Aerocool so have no view on that. My preferred brand in recent times is Seasonic, though I have used Enermax, Delta and a couple of others over the years. I just recommend erring on the side of caution on PSUs, and my mantra is "If in doubt, don't".
A lesson learned from PeterB about dignity in adversity, so Peter, In Memorium, "Onwards and Upwards".
