Depends on the job they are applying for. It you're looking for a car mechanic, then tatoos mean nothing. If you're looking for a Finance director, then visible tattoos are an instant rejection.

Re: Are tattoos now socially acceptable?

I think they are becoming more popular with a certain generation than they might of been in the past with that age group, bit hip and trendy. Especially more of a increase with females getting tats at least? My ex had 3 tats. Maybe for guys it's stayed the same.

I have thought about getting one/some, friends have encouraged me to *rolleyes* But I'm not sure about that.

And this may sound stupid and completely funny, but my mother wouldn't like me getting one. She'd be against it. Even though my dad has them. Once she came out with something ridiculous a long long time ago when I was a younger like: "oh, say if you end up killing someone one day, the police will be able to identify you if you have a tattoo showing" I said mum! You think I'm going to kill someone?! Nice to see you have faith in me. She goes maybe by accident.

Re: Are tattoos now socially acceptable?

At my workplace (office based) tattoos are fine as long as they are covered up. Seems reasonable to me.

Some of my family have tatts from when they were younger and now 30 years later they look pretty arse. It kinda put me off.

I say leave people to their own devices, let them do what they want. I don't have any tats, but what kind of difference does it make to a business if someone has one? People who have an issue with someone having an image on their body are stranger to me than the ones who have the image!

    A lot.

Some people get them to be contraversal or rebellious, they pick things that are often considered offense, because they are considered by some to be offensive.

If you're trying to please everyone, this isn't what you want.

The rule in my profession is no tattoos which won't be covered by a short sleeve shirt for slabwing, anything goes for rotorwing. Personally I like a girl with a few tattoos, including tramp stamps. Probably because they show poor judgement.

Re: Are tattoos now socially acceptable?

I dislike the Anti Tatoo judgement call of lots of employers...

but I have to keep mine covered, because it would raise eyebrows, which is a shame.

I like them, they show individualism, creattiviy in some cases where they're self designed, for me at least, they become a part of your soul.

I talk to mine sometimes. I'd miss my dragon if it were gone.

I don't have any myself, but out of the many people I do know with tattoos, none of them got any to be offensive, nor are any of the images offensive. I could understand if you had 'NONCE' tattooed on your forehead but most are images with some personal meaning to the individual. I'd say the people you are talking about are a tiny minority. Although after what Zak said I'm having second thoughts .

See i'm devided about that one. Nicely done on a cute girl is perfectly ok and can be very nice. However, it is also a warning shot if you only see them from behind to start with, sometimes you are pleasantly surprised, others you are shocked and even repulsed.

Re: Are tattoos now socially acceptable?

When I was younger I got quite a few done. Although I do not really think that the tattoos I had are type I would have gone for now, I'm glad that they don't look that bad and are not visible when wearing a T-shirt. I have no desire at all to get tattooed at all now.

To be honest, I think that what the tattoo is and what it looks like should be a big factor for employers. If you have someone with tacky tattoos plastered all up their arms then I think that it should go against them for working in certain jobs. If though, you had say, tastefull tribal art showing in the work place then that may be okay - when working with the public anyway.

I know that sounds a bit messed up. But some tattoos are look okay whilst others look really bad. Tacky and right in your face.
