Question The price of Uni just went up.

Thoughts? The increases don't come into play until 2012 so my last year will get bumped up. Interesting how they suggest 25% of poorer students will be better off. I can only assume this means that they get an increase maintenance loans and grants - with the loans needing to be paid back anyway,a nd the current loan/grant system is fine IMO (for 'poorer' students, i cant vouch for the gentry )

Re: The price of Uni just went up.

I come from an age where fewer people went to university, and we had fees paid and also got a grant to live off if our parents were poor.

We were poor, but it didn't put me off going to uni as I knew it would be paid for and would help me get a well paid job. And I also knew that the degree would be worth something when I'd finished as there was no arbitrary "target" of having 50% of people go there.

Surely this is better, especially to poor kids that the politicians are always whingeing about wanting to help, than the current system where the poorer you are, the more debt you get into?

I think Blair with his 50% target, that can obviously not be afforded by the state, has ruined education for the current generation. Many degrees are seriously not worth anything now - and that's no fault of the students either.

Can anybody seriously find anything wrong with sending fewer people to university, ensuring that the courses and degrees are of high quality, and the state paying for it? Goodness knows I've repaid the lot and more in taxes in the years since graduation.

The thing with grants is that if your parents have an accountant then you're pretty much gauranteed to get one.

I was the last year who didn't have to pay tuitition fees!

Do they still give grants then that you don't have to pay back?
In my day, poor ppl got them, rich ppl didn't (and didn't need them) and everybody got fees paid.
    Those were the days.

Me too and I count myself very fortunate. Not that it was sustainable, especially with the advent of more and more "bohemian" courses springing up (Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame anyone?).

Even the small student loan I needed took ages to pay back so goodness knows how long it will take those with £30k+ loans to repay.

Re: The price of Uni just went up.

The cost is not important, the repayments are. I currently have about 10,000 student loan debt, and I pay it back at £9 per month from a £16k salary. Nine pounds per month. The debt will probably eventually be written off, as I think the interest is increasing by more than my repayments. I don't think student loans are considered in credit score calculations - can someone clarify?

Anyone have a proper link detailing the repayment criteria for new students? Unless I'm being silly, I can't see it in the BBC News article. Until I see guidance on repayments for future students, the "OMG £9000 A YEAR!!1!" sky-is-falling comments just look silly to me.

AFAIK as I know they aren't taken into consideration. I checked my credit report on experian this week, and there's no mention of my £14,000 student loan.

Over 21k you have to start repaying. TBH im in the same boat as you in terms of it being a menial amount, but the sudden price jump which even then isnt final is a bit Q.Q
