    Re: Religion to be extinct

Don't forget, that Crusades were launched at the behest of the Vatican, and the Vatican is the Roman Catholic Church. The organisation makes the religion, not the other way around. All religion is the biases of control over the masses. It's a tool like democracy, it's made to keep everyone in line.

Not aside - both are examples of communities making war and incorrectly using religion as their reason for it. Religiously educated people condemn both, including Roman Catholics and Muslim scholars.

Don't forget, Christianity existed long before the Vatican.

Yup, because they either wanted to expand, or feared the erosion of their power.

One could argue chicken/egg scenario I guess.

The Vatican is full of highly religiously educated people, that didn't stop them calling for crusades, or not condemning a particular ethnic purging programme that went on a few decades back, or book burnings, scientist burnings, etc.

That's the point, people can use all manner of religious rationalisations to justify just about any immoral act. It's not just people who are the problem, it's religion which is the problem as well. Religion embraces ignorance and superstition. So why should we be surprised when people who follow it start behaving in an ignorant and superstitious manner?

I'd argue they weren't very well educated. The education in this country was no better at the time either. Thankfully, it is now, and that should be our focus if we wish to both represent religion more accurately and to prevent people from using it incorrectly.

It's not just people who are the problem, it's religion which is the problem as well. Religion embraces ignorance and superstition. So why should we be surprised when people who follow it start behaving in an ignorant and superstitious manner?
I think you're in need of a better religious education as well if you believe religion inherently embraces ignorance Religion is about questioning (the 'why'), rather than just blindly carrying on without questioning things.

Are the ideas under consideration hard to swallow? Absolutely. But really they are not much more so than the inductive reasoning we use to govern our every day lives with no more proof than a cyclic induction.

You're getting science mixed up with religion, there. Religion handwaves away the why with 'god did it'.

You're getting science mixed up with religion - religion constantly questions the 'why'. Science only seeks to answer the 'how'.

    Re: Religion to be extinct

When was the last time you heard a priest ask "why does the universe exists?"

They don't. Because they're 100% certain that God did it, and because he 'loves' us, or something.

They don't ask the why, the how, the when, or the where.

What little biases religion once had on philosophy has long since been replaced with doctrine.

    Re: Religion to be extinct

Its funny that origionally religion would have created communities in a common interest; people complain about inter religious war but how much good has it done uniting people and removing 'local' conflict.

Now with the advance in technology and communication it is constantly lambasted and sadly has seemed the acceptable thing to do.

No; I think if religion is going to become extinct then so are we.

    Re: Religion to be extinct

What nonsense, name me one other ideology which uses a catch-all like 'god did it' in place of 'i don't know'. Superstition (and supernatural worship), hand-waving, and retardation of further exploration in one fell swoop. Religion has done more to hold back mankind than any other factor, and it still does.
