I'm not happy about the outbreak of jollity that has overtaken this thread. Time to reignite the flame war with some pedantry methinks.

NiO2 would actually be Nickel Dioxide. NO2 is Nitrogen Dioxide, which is nasty stuff, but not particularly conducive to vigourous combustion. Nitrous Oxide is actually N20. It's miraculous qualities are due to the fact that it's fairly unstable and spontaneously decompses to Nitrogen and an Oxygen free radical at 400 degrees-ish.

Apparently the Romans used burning pigs covered in pitch against war elephants. It seems that they were rather effective at unsettling the elephants and were thus an effective weapon against them.
