Basically the guy is a lazy waste of space.
I would suspect that the work dried up in the area he lives, and being unwilling to move to find work, he just accepted the "no jobs for me" mantra and started sponging.

Not everyone has the motivation or determination to do something on their own though, so whilst he could have taken to writing software and trying to sell it, he obviously isnt that way inclined.

Which leaves the "lazy waste of space" seeming to be rather apt.

My views are on the side of the proposed benefits cap TBH but when I see an article like that I would assume that the author is trying make a case against the benefits cap by the way it is titled.
That article is clearly designed to wind the public up and support the cap.
With any sweeping changes there are always genuine cases where it is unfair. Why aren't we seeing these instead? There must be some cases where families with disabled members need expensive equipment to transport and support them etc and they will be affected by this cap.

On the "either it's food or heating" that the waste of oxygen of a father says, actually it's "either it's the full sky sports and movies HD package and 20 Cigarettes per day and 1 pouch of baccy per week and 24 cans of larger per week and £20 on alcohol in the pub per week or food and heating.
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."

Re: Are they really hard up?

This is part of what annoys me about the current benefits system - no way should we be supporting £60 of entertainment and loads of fags, beer and phones.

People should have to account for all of their benefit money, and if it is a luxury, which clearly a lot of their stuff is, then they should be made to give it up, or have some kind of cap on it.

In essence they should have to show a list of all of their expenses, then they will be told what they will get told what are luxuries and need to be dropped, what they will get money for, plus maybe £50 for emergancies per month.

As for him not working for so many years - ok, so there is not much in his area of work, but there are a hell of a lot of other jobs he could be doing in the mean time!

Incidentally birth control is FREE on the NHS - so a null statement (for them) as excuses go!

And a lot of Software places are screaming for proper talented programmers... so I took his comments about not having any work as just an excuse. in 10 years I've got a degree, had 3 jobs and climbed the ladder... why couldn't he?!

Actually that is a bit of a post code lottery, as to what options are available and which methods are suitable for the individual.

For example some people have a latex allergy, and have mood swings or similar with some of the tablet options.

In which case, they have 3 other options available, all of them free, and mostly with out any side effects too.

Some people diaphrams and coils don't work for!

I'm not saying these people are in this case.

Just that we should I think do more to encourage safety with adults, as a student I got shedloads of free rubbers, as an adult I'm expected to buy them for £12 a pack for the ones I like....

Re: Are they really hard up?

The guy's own words say so much. We must certainly not underestimate the stress and difficulties entailed in looking after a sick spouse and so many kids. Nevertheless, assuming he really has fallen on very hard times and has been doing everything he thinks he can do its obvious he has an outlook on life that prevents him from seeing the full extent of the possibilities in front of him.

While it's obviously they aren't living a complete life of luxury, it's also obvious they aren't doing too badly, as other's have said.
Being on benefits shouldn't be a ride in the park, otherwise it doesn't encourage anyone to get off of them, I mean, they should really cut down on the extras such as booze and cigarettes. And Sky for £60 a month, that's just crazy, and saying losing that would mean they would have no entertainment is just hilarious.

I'd be interested to know what you define as that?

Just how many luxuries does one need to have a complete life of them? Even the richest man in the world can't have everything.

At what point is one a complete life of luxury?

I'd argue that when you've money for drink and cigs without any concern for key life needs your there.

Re: Are they really hard up?

So I'd been having an email discussion with a friend about this... but hadn't realised there was a forum thread tucked away in QT.

    Some points from my email:

    1. They are getting ~31K NET. That is around £42k gross (assuming no pension payments/other deductions). That's not a bad wage. For doing nothing.

    2. Living on the dole should be a fairly miserable way to be. If it's easier to be on the dole than to be working then where is the incentive to work. If this guy gets a job it'd be a long time til he's pulling in £40k+. In Wales.

    3. Luxuries... There should be some system (vouchers?) whereby government handouts can only be spent on certain things - not handed out in cash form:

A quick breakdown of things I consider luxury that I don't feel these people deserve*:

    Sky TV - £15/week
Pub/Beers - £20/week (they are in wales. 3-4 beers should be £10 not £20, clearly don’t just have that once a week)
Mobile Phones - £32/week (are you mental?)
    24 Cans of lager - £20/week
    200 cigarettes - £60/week
    Tobacco - £15/week

    Total = £162/week

    or £8424/year.

    I find that obscene.

    * The asterisk by deserve... so many people feel they are owed something, or deserve something because everyone else has it / does it. That attitude needs to change.

    4. Teenage kids... I had a job from the week I turned 16, sure it was only in a supermarket at weekends (I was at college in the week), but this paid for my mobile phone / bits and bobs. There is no indication here of how old the teenagers are, nor whether they work (doubtful).

... but how do you solve the problem? The cap goes some way to prevent the 'wastage', though could still be more restrictive... I think that whilst benefits are handed out as cash then they are going to be spent on alcohol/cigarettes/Sky tv... Heck I don't even have Sky TV!

The fact he lives in wales hadn't gone unoticed mate which is why my first thought was app development. All you need is a dev kit (free for android), maybe a couple of cheap dev phones and an internet connection and you could start making some things. He could have also done freelance web development form home, in fact the possibilities are endless no matter your location if you're a tech person, which is what he purports to be.

I have been unemployed myself, I treated find a job as a full time job. Thats what this guy clearly isn't doing.
