Why does the UK need Scotland?

From a defence perspective, it would probably be easier to coordinate the defence of one land mass (England+Scotland+Wales) than just England. If anything, NI would be the most logical choice to dispose of.

I'm just considering the Spock logic perspective & not considering politics, economics or societal stuff though.

If Scotland does vote for independence do you think Westminster will let us go? If we did and Westminster hummed and hawed then what's to stop Scottish companies and individuals not paying tax for instance? I'm self employed so I could quite easily withhold my tax payments if I wanted to.

Personally, I'd like to see the referendum extended to England to give us the opportunity to say whether we want to keep Scotland.

Default on what? If Westminster didn't agree with a Scottish vote for independence then no debt would be apportioned to Scotland...

And you could easily argue that Scotland is quite self sufficient in petrol, food and energy exporting significant amounts of all of these South. In fact now you've mentioned it, it is perhaps these things (especially energy) that makes the UK reliant on Scotland?

peterb - if Scotland voted for independence and England/ Wales/ NI said they wanted Scotland to stay within the UK then that would be very nice but it would REALLY be asking for trouble!
