I found this on the sophos blog today.
I think that is it unacceptable for employers to ask for this information.

'Thank you for your time, but it appears this job isn't for me afterall'
Shortly followed by walking out.
That said, work people are friends on facebook, so I'm not overly fussed if they see it, but having my login details is not going to happen.
unless its some sort of test to see whether you are willing to share confidential information. the linked page says its a tactic used by the police recruiters in USA, if you are willing to share your own personal info, then you are also willing to share info about potential raids on criminals, bits of evidence to the press or lawyers, that sort of thing..
just my thoughts on the matter.
Seems entirely stupid, id turn down the job if it required that... its the principle that if they want that then you may as well give them the keys to your house and let them check the contents etc!.
Why do they need it? It breaks any legal type of privacy.
Ask the interviewer for their address and house keys, it's only fair after all to share that level of trust
My response:
Hahahahaha, hahahaha, hahahahaha, *breathes* you think I would trust so much personal information to an advertising firm that describes its users as "DUMB F*CKS" (source: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/05...ok_trust_dumb/)
Tbh, anyone who is stupid enough to trust facebook with anything they wouldn't want EVERYONE to know, is probably dumb enough to give it up to someone for a job.
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
Just another step in the advance of the thought police in modern society though isn't it?.
However blase (accent over the e!) we might have become about personal freedoms, and our abilities to just say no, there is a creeping insidiousness in society, very subtle and low key, that disturbs the hell out of me.
I think we are sleepwalking into a controlled future with the media and small but vociferous pressure groups leading the way.

Any potential employer is entirely free to examine the full details of my Facebook account. And if they can find one, it'll be a shock, not least to me. To put that another way, if anyone finds a Facebook account, or Twitter account, purporting to be me, it's a fake.
If I had one, no way would I hand it over. I would not even do what that man did, and offer to log in. Private material is just that - private, and I'll decide who I share it with. If their job required that, they can shove their job up their ..... that is, I'd politely decline and consider myself lucky to have escaped working for an employer that thinks that is acceptable.

I wonder what they'd say to a) I dont have an account (really, I deleted mine) and b) when I did I couldnt tell you the password even if I wanted to as it is stored in a password vault and is an enormous random string.
Social engineer the boss's, give his details when asked for yours at the interview.
Create a fake one with ... niche or alternate interests and the sue the ass off of them for discrimination?
Could be a job in of itself.
