I always had a lot of respect for him as a minister, IMO he was one of the few New Labour ministers with integrity. Here's hoping that his anouncement is one more step on the road to removing the stigma surrounding the illness.

Chris Smith used to be my local MP. I wrote to him on a number of occasions and on each one recevied a swift, informed, personally signed and helpful response, that was clearly written by a human as opposed to a standard computer reply.

He's one of the better Labour MP's IMHO. Good to see him sat next to Cook when he resigned over Iraq a couple of years ago. He gave him a comforting pat on the back when Cook sat down and is one of the only times I have witnessed actual personal feeling in the commons.

I have a lot of respect for him.
