Are they going to tax businesses too? What about telecommuters? What about people that don't watch tv programmes via the internet?
Deeply stupid idea tbh, mind you, by the time they're talking of implementing it (2017) I doubt I'll be living here anyway.

Well at least we have only got another 10 years of paying that studpid TV licence!
What a waste of money!
I suppose this would be in place of the existing TV licence. By 2017 I think that PC's and TV's would be largely integrated anyway, so I dont think it would cost us any more money.

Hmm what next folks, a tax on our breathing. The government have just shown that they are WAY out of touch with normal people. We get taxed on our parts ( VAT @ 17.5%), we get taxed on the electric it uses, we get taxed on the internet connections (check your prices - all have VAT ) and now we're going towards pay for capacity and then this.
The government said they want to make "computing" and the internet more affordable to the not so rich amongst us and then they go and pull a stunt like this.
LOL you guys make me laugh. I'd suggest getting wound up by something that is going to actually matter. 2017 won't have these people in charge in the government and they will probably change there mind all together.
Tax is always going to happen, and quite frankly i think you miss the point that if you charge for PC's then businesses are going to be hit and i think you'll find they stop that idea pretty damn quick.
Taxing the internet is bound to happen sooner or later. Its a major part of the economy now, get used to it, as time goes on we will see more and more taxes appearing to govern it.

I think the money for the TV license is worth it. What the BBC produces is unrivalled in quality and accessibility around the world. From TV series and programs to the documentaries and radio stations and news, it's possibly some of the best spent money around. It's just that the method of collecting that money is a bit twisted. Taxing computers only twists it further.
They could make it optional but of course the fear is that then no-one would pay. However, when people suddenly realise what they miss I think more people would opt to pay for the BBC over other overly expensive, utterly naff cable/satellite packages.
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.
I was going to try and write something about how good the BBC is - but you've already done it better than I could! I personally think the license fee is justified - because the BBC don't need to worry about ratings as much as other channels, they can make programmes that are actually decent rather than just appealing to the masses.
