Angry One size does NOT fit all

Well here's another example of why having any form of centralised European government is a complete joke.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4535815.stm

Yes employees need to be protected from unscrupulous employers who'd exploit them, but individuals should be free to work the hours that suit them and their circumstances. i.e. if you want to work extra overtime to pay for a holiday then that is your right

That's just stupid. Who's going to enforce that? Who do they prosecute?

If people want to work longer hours they darn well should have the right. This is a case of the government trying to dictate exactly how everyone should live their lives. They need to get off it and do something useful.

It seems unfair, but I think that people shouldn't need to work more than 48 hours a week to live comfortably. Maybe it goes to show that wages being paid do not add up to enough for the true cost of living in this country.

I agree that it should be up to the individual on how much they wish to work.

This is so wrong, people should have the right to choose if they want to work more than 48 hours a week. Good to see the UK government having the sense to try and block this move, from their point of view, it'll mean more tax income for them as well.

The point is that there are many people working in the financial sector who work silly hours because it is expected of them. Yes they generally get paid a lot, but they will work 8am to 9pm as a minimum and often longer - I have a friend who frequently works 8am to midnight. They are paid a monthly salary, not an hourly wage, and do not get overtime payments. They do get bonuses for apparent productivity, but these often equate to sub-minimum-wage amounts per overtime-hour.

This is really where it's aimed, not lower-paid workers struggling on 48-hours' wages.

TBH, this has nothing to do with the UK government at all, more to do with individual company policies. Slapping a law down on this will help the people you mentioned, but many many more people will suffer because of it.

Overtime isn't worth the extra money anyway, due to the overtime getting whacked on your monthly salary the tax on it is rediculous, last overtime claim I made was for 40 hours on top of what I had for that month (I had 97 in reality they would only pay for 40) and I got £267 for it out of the what should of been £595 for the overtime.

Whoever said above that you could live off 48 hours a week, I would love to know how. I put overtime in all the time, work the saturdays for the extra few bob. Will be a few years of extreme overtime for me so I can get some savings put aside that equate anywhere near a deposit of a house.

The problem is the wages differ massively the further south you go. I had this conversation with Hex about this. I was telling him what I did for work as we both work in Uni's and he was telling me for what I did I could get another 5k on top of what I am being paid now for the same job :/

And you also have to pay more for living further South, especially in and around London!

That doesn't make sense - at 40% tax and 1% NIC you should still see 59% of your gross earnings - i.e. £351 of £595. Of course, you may not be counting your pension (or student loan?) deductions as net income.

Anyway, £595 for 40 hours work? That's £14.87 an hour, or over £37,000 for a 48-hour week. You're complaining that this isn't enough?

    Errrrrr...

I think £15 an hour would be £30k for a 37.5 hour week and that is the standard hours a salary is calculated against.

In my case its a 36 hour week but overtime is sort of expected, however if you put the work in and bring the business in you benefit from the bonus payment. so you get out what you put in and its fair enough imo.

I do think hours should be capped however, people who work so much are putting their health in danger imo, people should be dedicated to work and all that yes but everybody works to live not the other way round. If you cant manage on your basic wage doing 37.5 hours a week then your in the wrong job tbh as it clearly doesnt match what your spending.

Ive been up both hills, wasnt too long ago I was making a living on £6 an hour, it was a struggle but it is easily doable. If its not then I would suggest you need to reduce your outgoings.

Gotta love those Labour MEP's They'll be the first ones screaming when jobs go outside the EU due to crack pot policies like this one.

Tis about time we removed ourselves from the club of these short sighted socialists. Me don't thinks the USA, China or India care too much for this kind of nannying legislation.

Yes, but Grey M@a said he doesn't think one can make do with the earnings from a 48-hour week.

I was merely pointing out that from the data he gave it showed he would earn roughly £37,000 gross from that 48-hour week, which is far more than the average salary, thereby rather negating his argument.

    Your ball.
