Why the hell do the police need jetski's?

Well, I was at work today and we had a fire alarm (we get them quite often), I work on the Quayside in Newcastle so we assemble by the river, so we are standing about smoking when 2 police Jetskis drive past... Now a few thoughts ran through my mind, when did we ever have a problem with pirates on the Tyne river?

So I had a look when I got home and found this

Now, These things must cost a fair bit plus the cost of training and of course the fact that these bobbies are not out catching actual criminals and instead are pissing about on jetskis.

I read the site and I must be honest, the things they are saying to justify this dont sound like anything that could not be solved by either the police launch or a patrol car from shore or even if they had a major problem with somebody making away with a rare painting or millenium diamond or whatever there are allways helicopters (we have 2 in this area).

What do you boys think, utter waste of taxpayers money and police resources or sensible step?

    Why do they need jetskis?

Well, when the thrill of wasting the tax payers money going at ridiculous speeds wont do, theyll have to resort to some other sort of tax paid entertainment wont they

It costs £2000 an hour to have those helicopters in the air. Apparently.

how much does it cost to buy 2 jet skis, and safety equpiment, and train all the people to use them, and paperwork invovled, and extra man power..etc...

could just use a helicopter downdraft to blow away some silly beggars on jet skis once, then no one would do it again. Only take 15mins

Its so they can go 159mph on the water and claim it wasn't a road and they were familiarising themselves with the waves and the jetski's

Other than that Gaz, it to catch the jumpers off the tyne bridge, seems to be a lot of people taking nose dives off it as of late.

Jet skis can be anything from £1k to £10k. Knowing the police, they probably went for the £10k ones

Well, thats what they reckon when they are not using it to build a case against drivers eating apples behind the wheel....

its a fair point but they already have those choppers bought and paid for and a budget for fuel, I seriously doubt they would have much of a need for a helicopter in sea/river situations in all honesty, but if the need should ever arise they do have that tool available. I really cannot see what it is that they can do with jetskis that they cant with patrol boats and cars.

" They will also be deployed as a fast response vessel to any suspicious incidents during the Labour Party Spring Conference" such as John Prescott taking sense. You would need 2 powerful jetskis to carry him off, preferably face down.

I'm all for it tbh, as long as there are Baywatch type female officers in skimpy swimsuits.

I am sure there could be occasions where jetskies might be of value, but I cannot imagine that such instances would be too common.

You lot are awfully good at running down your police service. I would love for the police in this country to be able to pay their staff decent salaries, let alone even be able to afford jetski's.

Anyway, the next time someone is drowning, caught in a current, or whatever, I'm sure you'd like to explain to their family why the police should use cars and patrol boats to rescue them. A jetski is clearly a rapid response vehicle, and in rescue situations, time is what counts. Granted, a helicopter could be used, but it first has to be launched, flown to the area, and then either divers (Who have to get kitted up first) dropped, or a rescuer winched down, all of which takes a lot more time than an officer hopping on a jetski and going off.

I haven't voted in this poll, because the two options are so completely biased towards the same answer. I would have voted yes.

Well, firstly its not the police who are responsible for search and recue, that would be the coast gaurd, and if they needed to be equiped with jetskis to be effective I would have no problem with that, however I do not see why the police need them.

secondly we dont have a lot of water sports here on account of the cold climate and there is certainly very little activity like this on the Tyne as it is a cold stinking industrial river.

Also dont let my flippant (yet funny) options put you off voting, I think we all knows its a simple yes or no.

How fricking ridiculous is that? If the police are first on the scene, or in the area or whatever, are they just gonna stand back and say, "That's not our job, we'll sit here and wait for the Coast Guard"? I think it's strange that they have jetski's, but I certainly don't think I would have a problem if river police on the Thames had them (dunno if they do or not).

Besides, how do you know they don't use the river as a high speed getaway? Perhaps they need to have jetski's to keep up in the even of a chase? Who knows? I don't. That's why I'll leave the police to get on with their job and stop criticising every bloody little thing they do!

Well if you read the link I provided you can see thier justification for buying jetskis, I think you will find it is for none of these things you mention.
