Its up to people whether they smoke or not. If its not illegal i don't see how the government has the right to infringe on peoples rights whether they are allowed to smoke in public or not.

IF the shop/club/bar/restaraunt wants to stop smoking in its place of business its up to them. Then you could choose where you want to go, non smokers can go to one club if they want to avoid smoke, or go to a club with a smokers room etc.

One of my favourite hobbies is to walk about in public places and swing an axe in random directions. Its a nasty habit of mine, Ive tried to stop, but the urge is just too powerful. I'm not intensionally going to try and hurt anyone in the process of swinging my nice shiny axe, but if someone gets hurt, sorry 'bout that.

There is a limit on what peoples rights are in public. If something could be damaging to my health unnecessarily, then actions should be taken to stop it.

I'd go with the "its illegal to smoke other drugs, so why not tobacco" argument.

Also, someone mentioned driving as a killer. Driving is a nescessity. It is REQUIRED. Smoking is a waste of time, money and life. There is NO need for smoking.

People can do it for all I care, people can take drugs for all I care, but PLEASE do it by URSELF, so not to harm anyone. I think Labour should bring this in, and it would earn them a lot of respect from me for one, as it is such a bold move. Summit the Tories would never even dare do for sure.

I take it we save the car for strictly necessary journeys then, and only purchase the most environmentally friendly of cars? I own 2 cars 1 mondeo and a landrover but I cycle to work every day and made sure where I live is near enough to work to do that. But cars are not a necessity, my parents have only had one for 7 years and they are in their early 50's. So you can drive down the road in the axe as well as walking around swinging one thats alight. Hell I dont even smoke but believe a ban is wrong.

Smoking outside is not an issue, Its outside ffs, the ratio of smoke particles from a cigarette to the amount in the air already is pointless, the only bad point to your health is in closed contained environments, and i still hold to my point it should be at the discression of the landlord what happens.

If you don't want to breathe smoke go to the non smokers place, if you don't mind and want to be with smokers go to the smokers place.

I'm sure if you took this to the extreme you could have a smokers only place where you had to smoke to get in.

Why impose your values on others?. Its there right to choose whether they smoke or not and if you are outside it doesn't matter and if you are inside you have a choice to go elsewhere.

TiG - i have the choice to go elsewhere? what about MY rights to be there? Everyone has the right to be there and smokers who couldnt give a rats arse infringe on MY rights.

Off the subject of that, down my local theres a 6 inch wooden barrier protecting me from the smoking area. Well im glad thats there cause without it i might end up breathing in cigerette smoke or something
