    Mad about animals

I'm watching this programme at the moment. About animal activists. These people are scary. I recall from working at the docks (for a telecomms company, not a dock worker) during the cattle exports for veal and the animal rights activists demonstrators. I'd forgotten just how rabid they were. We had to have police escorts from work as we would have been attacked. We had no connection with the trade but because we came from the direction of the docks and the protesters weren't too fussy about making distinctions.

Some guy has been yelling at building workers telling them to take their masks off asking "what are you afraid of?" well on recent form I'd say they were afraid of having their homes attacked, there persons attacked and their dead relatives dug up. A girl who disagreed and had a reasonable argument was shouted down by a woman with a loudhailer stood right in front of her, yelling abuse at her. Nasty

Where do these people get off intimidating, threatening and bullying people? Many just going about their business.

I used to have some sympathy with the moderate ones. Since ALF burned down 3 fellow Oxford colleges' boathouses down however, who incidentally had absolutely no connection to what they were protesting about, I've come to the conclusion that animal testing is completely wrong. We should be testing on these idiots instead.

roffles, the ALF have only succeeded in alienating every student from Oxford Uni (who will go on to be prime ministers, coucillors, law makers etc.) from the animal rights cause and establishing a far more popular pro-testing movement to tell the Extremists what the public actually think.

i must admit most of these people do make me think that they might in fact be on the payrol of the animal testing lobby. How can burning down a boat yard, threatening to kidnap children help your course in the long run?

yet it does nicely make people form ranks against them.

now, if only people do the same for anyone who only buys organic cheese.

Well having been on the receiving end of their bile and being equally nothing to do with what they were protesting about I have absolutely no sympathy with their cause. The term 'rabid' described their behaviour perfectly.

But jail is no deterrent to these people. I don't know how many of you saw the program. 2 of th epeople on it have just been jailed for the grave robbery recently. The relentless hate campaigns that they wage against people. They have no remorse, no empathy and only their own blinkered view. Absolute fanatics.

Maybe if they are asked then they will volunteer to take the place of the animals. Were any activists among the recent human testing that went wrong?

Wonder why I hadn't seen Alf for a while. Obviously in the 'scrubs' for criminal damage. Hang on, no, he's an alien. He'll be out with the other 1022 others that we know were let out.

Well, I think you showed a lot of restaint RVF. If I'd taken an ear bashing from a hate filled nutter just because I worked in the vicinity of one of their targets my reply would have been an uprecedented torrent of abuse followed by (if necessary) a Mini-Maglite loaded fist.

Well mate I had a few run -ins with them. The first was when they blocked off the road forcing us to use a back road out. I wasn't going to have my right to use a public right of way blocked so I rode my bike up and demanded that they allow me to pass. Which after a few minutes they actually did. Though the 'leader' at that time was a rather less than agitated young lady who decided I had a reasonable issue and reason to be angry. Which I was. Fair enough, I made my point no swearing or shouting, she agreed with me and I went on my way. A couple of other minor incidents where my colleague and I were threatened obliquely with a 'we'll remember you'. But it began to get nastier as time went on.

The time when we had the escort it was simply not worth it (actually I think we were escorted a few times but this was teh worst). They were an absolute mob and were stirred up to fever pitch. By this time there had been violence and it was really on a knife edge. This was not a small gathering. It was later on in the protests and there were hundreds of people in a baying mob. So I contented myself with giving them the finger as I rode past. Which in retrospect wasn't the smartest thing to do as it could very easily have set off a chain reaction. But at the time I felt humiliated and angry by their actions and just didn't want to slink off with my tail between my legs when I had no reason to.

That program though was not representative of a majority who are concerned about animal welfare.

It was simply a case of filming some fanatics as it makes for better TV.

It's exactly the same when they film football violence; but most are aware enough to realise that a majority of football fans are law abiding citizens and abhor violence.

chriscom, while I agree with what you say these fanatics do have an ability to stir up those normally law abiding people who sometimes attend initially peaceful protest into a frenzy. Similar to the way a hard core of football hooligans stir up people who wouldn't normally get involved. I've seen them at work first hand. They are also extremely belligerent.

I would hazard a guess that most people people who post on here abhor cruelty to animals. But I strongly doubt that they would harrass people for years, intimidate, bully, physically or verbally abuse people, or damage the homes of people simply because they believed that they were associated with testing on animals for medical purposes or transport of cattle for veal (as in my own case).
