    Political Correctness

Is everybody quite miffed about the amount of political overcorrectness that is around in these modern times?

Its quite annoying to me, especially when its someone being overcorrect to myself. Saying "Your big boned" "No, im not, im f**king fat!"

Do you agree (and not about me being fat! )?

What are you supposed to sing then, Ba Ba Not White Coloured Sheep? I mean, FFS, some sheep are white, some are black.

Police officers are normally men, so Policeman, and Crossing attendants are normally Ladies, so LollipopLady!

Its that kinda knitpicking that is making this country of ours one of the rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishest atm. Stop it, and get on with your lives!

The primary drive towards 'political correctness' originates from the US in the late 80s and early 90s and subsequently proliferated to other English speaking countries. There're very good reasons why it was originated in the US - it is one of the most literal societies (as in, people take what you say to the letter) and it was a drive towards stamping out discrimination, amongst others.

Being a literal society, people are being afraid of being sued for what they say (and in the US you can end up paying a lot for saying the 'wrong thing'). The stamping out discrimination bit the craziest part. Discrimination is in people's attitude; it can often reflected in the language, but you can still be discriminatory using a different language - so we ended up back in square one.

One of the most ridiculous example of political correctness gone crazy was found in San Francisco: you're not allow to say people are fat (and there're plenty of fat people in the US) - it is discriminatory! Of course it is - people are not born fat, they are made fat by their life-style and sometimes by medical conditions. If people made themselves fat and don't want to be called fat, loose the weight!

I think the drive to be PC predated the late 80's. I remember my dad, who was a teacher, going to a course in the late seventies to be taught to say coffee with or without milk rather than black or white coffee.

Although I agree that PC has gone too far in a lot of instances, most of the time when I hear people saying "It's PC gone mad" it is when they are being covertly racist/sexist/ant semitic etc.

Exactly. Instead of concentrating on such irrelevant bs we should be trying to solve more serious issues. Instead of changing the words to an ageold nursery rhyme how about trying to heal the rift between the black and white communtiy in under priviliged areas.

the correct term for them is 'wan*er'

political correctness is alright up to a point, but when people start going mad to create new PC laws, without even asking the people they effect if they mind.

a few PC quirks i've noticed.....

u can't mention the word "fat" anywhere near a fat person, but it seems ok for fat people to say "ooh, your skinny" to thin people whenever they feel like, regardless of what the thin person feels about this

if a work colleague becomes pregnant, middle aged women are completely at liberty to discuss the most intimate and graphic details of their genitalia, as loudly as they wish within the office environment BUT..perish the thought that a man, should ever even admit to having genitalia, even if doing so quietly in a private conversation with another bloke
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is
