anyone know why they arrested him in the first place?
he was being arsey with the standard campus security people, whose "random" id check (he's of iranian descent) showed he'd forgotten his student card, so they wanted to evict him from the library.

the coppers came, and while he was eventually walking out (amidst much shouting) they grabbed him & tasered him

they then told him to stand up or get tasered again (which they obliged with), ignoring the ~15 minute recovery time on a 5 second "drive mode" blast with a police issue taser

see above paragraph for shock #3

they then handcuffed him, started dragging him out, and tasered him twice more in the process

Never been tasered myself, but he seemed perfectly capable of mouthing off to the cops after he had been tasered.

You cant see enough from the video to make a full judgement but at the end of the day, the cops dont taser people for no reason and i cant see them abusing their power in front of that many people.

    Still quite disturbing though.

The Bill of Rights is more a set of guide lines now to be ignored or used to suit whichever set of means that the government is aiming towards.

This isnt the UK though. Many of my US friends have said this kinda thing is rife there. Most of it goes covered up apparently.

An absolute disgrace, just gives me another reason to never set foot in such a disgraceful country. They are so up themselves its unbelievable. The students should have jumped the cops!! anyway, im sure this vid is enough evidence for the cops to get sent down, as well as all the witnesses. Just shows you with so many people around to see what happened doesnt mean anything, an absolute joke, just like americas foreign policy. Makes me grateful to be in the UK.

although I disagree with the amount of force, I have to ask why he refused to leave when he knows he is required to have a pass after 11?

Plus I know from in this country how students seem to think they are better than security guards and bouncers and get all high and mighty. I remember seeing in Cambridge a bunch of students arguing with a bouncer that they should be allowed into a bar because he was 'infringing on their human rights' etc. It went on for a bit until one of them called the bouncer a neanderthal at which point the bouncer slapped him

Sorry but in this case, LOL
A perfect example of how most students just dont have any common sense at all.
I almost wiped out a whole bunch of them once when they decided to cross a national limit dual carriageway in the dead of night, wearing dark clothes, single file. I was fortunately only doing 70 when I saw them appear from nowhere and start crossing. The first muppet was being plain dangerous crossing in front but 10 ofn the muppets followed after him! I was thankful for ABS at the time but a little part of me thinks that If I had sent a few flying they might think twice before being idiots.
I say most as clearly not all totally lack common sense. I was a student once and I have many ex student friends. They generally had no common sense whatsoever.

Do you know how this could have been solved quickly and quietly without force?

    By

    A) Following the request of the officer.
    B) Following the University rules.
    C) Not continually arguing with the officer.

Like it or not, he was in the wrong, he should have respected the Officer and the rules in place.

    A few points.
    1) He was not a Police Officer, he was UNI Police. So judging the whole of the US on one Uni Police officer going overboard would be the same as judging the UK on one bouncer who decided to give someone a kicking (WHICH AGAIN doesn't happen unless you do something wrong)

    2) Uni Police don't carry guns.

    3) In the UK we are known for our fair and effective Police force, in America you do what they tell you, and argue later. I've spent years over there and that's how it works, I explained that to all my friends who came over this year. Respect his position, do not argue and do what he says, if he's wrong, it'll come out in the wash.

With this video you don't see the start of the video, what caused the argument, I'm pretty sure the officer told him to leave and he kicked off, if he continued to, whilst resisting arrest, he is within his rights, as well as training to use the taser. I do agree he may have over used it, but as someone pointed out, he was unable to walk, yet perfectly capable of swearing and arguing at the top of his voice to get attention and cause a scene. The officer had to stop that before that was a riot - which some of you are advacating.

Morale - Respect someone in a position of authority's power. I have an IQ double of that of the local bouncers, if they ask me to leave, I walk out quitely.

But that's exactly the problem. They were using the taser to punish him for swearing at them rather than to incapacitate him and prevent him causing harm to others or himself. That is unacceptable.

If his swearing alone would have been sufficient to start a riot, then the campus authorities have a problem that extends far beyond this incident.

I'm not saying the student was in the right, but the officer was clearly in the wrong. Sure, any reasonable person would have behaved differently and just left, but that doesn't excuse the abuse of power in this situation.

I guess you'll not object to being tasered for breaking the speed limit by 1 MPH then

    Agreed
(WHICH AGAIN doesn't happen unless you do something wrong)
A very naive statement. Also completely incorrect.
    2) Uni Police don't carry guns.
I dont see how that gives them the right to abuse their taser simply because they dont have a more dangerous weapon

They were telling him to get up when he couldn't and tasering him when he failed to get up. I doubt you'd be quiet either.

    What a snobbish statement!

god some of the comments on this thread are disgustingly callous and seem to have a pyschotic desire to defend the completely indefensible. People who say **** like "cops don't do stuff like that for no reason" are either hopelessly niave or liars. Most people have met cops who are just itching to start something and who will be as brutal as any other street thug when given half a chance.

The other thing these guys in the video are rent a cops, who are well known for having a chip on their shoulder cos they can't get into the real police and like to flex what little authority they have at any given oppurtunity.

Another thing that bothered me was the fact the other students didn't do much, I'd like to think that if that happened here the rent a cops would have been dealing with a riot and some very sore faces.
