Sword of Aragon review
Platform: PC, amiga.
Sword of Aragon is a turn-based strategy game set in a medieval realm complete with elves, goblins, troll and titans. You start off (after the death of your father, the duke) with a single city to defend and develop. In the first turn, your city is attacked by the goblins that killed your father and you have to defend the city with all the resources you can muster.
After surviving this, you are left to unite the whole realm in whatever manner you see fit.
There are two main aspect to the game, the strategic map and the battle map.
The strategic map shows your city and the other cities in the realm. You can develop your cities, putting money into agriculture, mining, commerce etc. Make sure you invest in agriculture to see you through the harsh winters. You can crate and train troops, and head off to conquer other cities, or to threaten them sufficiently to pay you tribute. Heroes can be recruited to aid your troops in battle.
The battle map is for when you are attacked, or attack. You place your troops, and then start the fight. The mechanics are simple, move your infantry type troops onto the enemy to attack them, or fight from range with different bows or spells.
The game is very well balanced, with lots of options and unexplored areas to entertain you. Random and scripted events mean a lot of different ways to complete the game, and ensure replayability.
Sword of Aragon is game easily the equal in terms of gameplay to modern RTS games. And it's only about 200k.
Go! Fight! Avenge your father!
(It is a bit old, but is still great. Works fine with dosbox and d-fend)
