Post I'm planning to build a new, more powerful gaming oriented PC - thoughts?

Edit: I've waited over a week, with 100 views on the thread but not a single reply? Either nothing is wrong with my planned upgrades or it is so bad nobody wants to hurt me.

Hey everyone. I built my current rig in June of last year, intended as an intermediate gaming PC after being a console gamer for years. I've decided that I want more power(!) than I currently have at my disposal, so I will be essentially building an entirely new rig (with taking my HDD etc. from my current pc) hopefully by the end of this year.

Here are links to my current build and the "upgrades" I would like to purchase (via PCPartPicker):

    Current build
    Future upgrades

I eventually wish to SLI the graphics card if I feel the need to.

Thanks for taking your time to look!

Ok, one of the things you might have to rethink is the PSU if you want to SLI GTX 770s in the future. The MSI GeForce GTX 770 GAMING requires two 8pin PEG connectors each. But the XFX XTR 550W only has two.

XTR 650W would be a good option. Others to consider are:
Super Flower Leadex Gold 650W @ OCUK. Only problem is the Cooler Master state the PSU length limit in the HAF XB is 180mm, which is exactly the same depth as the Leadex.
For same price you could also have the Corsair RM750, but also 180mm deep and probably not as good as the Leadex.

Re: I'm planning to build a new, more powerful gaming oriented PC - thoughts?

Thank you for your input. I am aware that I would eventually need more power in the PSU department, but I am not sure when I'd be eventually buying a second 770. I think it would be the best idea to get the XTR 650w, or one of the other alternatives you mentioned... Although I will have to be careful because of the size of the HAF XB like you say.

I'll have to look into it a bit more, but thank you for helping. Do you see any problems with the rest of my planned upgrades?

why are you changing the 7770 for a 780? is it really that big a step up? Would an R7-290 not be a better improvement?

Do you mean an R9 270(/X), like the HD7870?

    Upgrade your current rig??

You could get a Xeon E3 1230 V3 or a locked Core i5,and the change over the graphics card.

SLI and Crossfire is usually not worth the effort IMHO.

    I would get the following:

I'd look at the Gigabyte Z87X-OC motherboard. Not only is it a belter of a board but Gigabyte have UK warranty to boot.

As cat says, you're upgrading too much too soon. If you have £800 to spend on that machine, keep the motherboard, RAM etc, just grab either an i5 or xeon, the SSDs and dump the rest into a 290X/780 and a 550W PSU. It'll knock spots off your proposed new build.

Re: I'm planning to build a new, more powerful gaming oriented PC - thoughts?

The reason it looks to be such a big step up is because I'd rather "upgrade" to something worthwhile rather than having to upgrade every now and then. Not that what you have all suggested is not worthwhile, but I see more worth in what I have proposed. I am not buying all of these parts in bulk, rather I will be buying them one part at a time... So no doubt throughout the course of the year, better components may make a show, which means I will have to reconsider the parts I may not already have.

Edit: Sorry for being rather late replying.

You are just wasting your money IMHO,by ditching that motherboard and getting a K series Core i5 CPU and spending even more money on a decent cooler.

In reality how much are you going to gain in lightly threaded games without delidding?? 10%? 20%?? In any of new multithreaded games the Xeon E3 will be faster than a Core i5 4670K anyway.
