Intermittent problem with new build
I have built a new pc for our home office:
Silverstone MINI FT03 Case, AMD A10 6700 GPU, 8GB Ram, Gigabyte F2A88XN wifi MB, 60GB SSD
1TB HDD, Lg slim optical, Win 7 64bit, Silverstone SFX 300w PSU, Corsair H55 Cooler.
Using graphics on GPU.
On 3 occasions now, in use, the monitor goes to sleep, whilst the PC is still on. The power and reset buttons are unresponsive, and the only way to shut down is via the switch on the PSU. The power and reset button function as intended otherwise. cpu temp on idle is around 40oC.
I did notice just now when it did this again, that the optical plug light was off, which suggest to me that the IO is not powered, which would explain why the monitor went to sleep.
I have had great difficulty updating the FW on the MB to the latest, as the procedure advised by GB did not work and they suggested sending the board back to them to do
Any ideas as to what is going on here?
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
Have you made sure any and all power saving options are turned off on the monitor? Does it happen when the PC is idle or can it happen when you're in the middle of doing something on it?
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
I suspect the problem is with the power saving modes - either crashing on entering or in particular, problems waking.
The causes can be related to GPU (in your case, CPU) power saving modes, or the PSU might not be providing enough juice on standby to wake up from keyboard or power switch operation.
Windows can check the configuration of drivers etc. for power saving via the following:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7638/...er-efficiency/
Typically that will highlight problems going into suspension, rather than waking, but it might be worth a look. GPU drivers should certainly be updated if you can.
Otherwise a workaround is changing the power saving options in windows (type power saving into the dialogue box and pick 'change what the power-saving options do') - disable turning off the display and see if that helps.
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
What make of SSD is it? I know Samsungs - particularly if you've installed their additional software - can play with power saving modes.

Only power saving mode on monitor is when there is no signal. Monitor works fine.
Happens when in middle of doing something

the pc goes into sleep mode as set, ie after 20mins inactivity, and wakes just fine with mouse or keyboard.
I dont think its a power saving issue as this happened before I set any power saving. Also, the pc is still on but seems like there is no power to the IO's on the MB?
Thanks

By default the PC will have some power saving modes active - CPU sleep states, GPU low power states etc. all operate by default and in some cases without software. That it works sometimes doesn't rule out there being a problem on other times.
However it could also just be the computer freezing (or partly freezing) - if the signal drops to the monitor it will likely go to sleep. Some parts of the computer may continue operating in a partially crashed state.
Like I said, GPU drivers tends to be one of the causes of this, as is BIOS version - you say you are having difficulty updating which is a concern in itself. If updating the drivers doesn't help, you can disable the low-power states for the GPU and CPU just incase that helps with stability.

I think that's a partial crash or freeze.

I managed to update the bios after following another guide from Gigabyte.
Will see if these is an update for the GPU and if it makes any difference
Thanks
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
Right update drivers for GPU - had not installed any! Thanks for the tip:)
Will see how it is now
Thanks again

thanks
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
Wow, you managed to function without and VGA drivers - don't get mistaken, not mocking you. Rather admiring, that even with substandard display settings you were working plus doing diagnostics. Good for you that you managed to solve it in the end.

Everything was working fine, the display was at the correct resolution - connected by DVI, same method as old pc, and looked no different
It never occurred to me that I needed to install drivers for the GPU, but for everything else - of course!
Well, I've certainly learned something today.
I hope this solves my original problem -- time will tell
Thanks all
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
well, problem still persisted, changed PSU, still happened, then changed MB, still happened!
Eventually, I downloaded some software from AMD catalyst control center, and since then no problem!
The only issue I have now is constant errors with "host services for catalyst control stopped running..."
No idea how to fix this as uninstalling all AMD software and re-installing did not work!
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
Try this:
"Navigate to c:\ and right click on*Users. Select*properties. Under the*General*tab,*look at the bottom for the Hidden selection. If there is not a check mark in the box, place a check mark there. Hit apply, select yes to apply to all subdirectories. If you clicked ok, you may notice that it disappeared from the right pane once it finishes. It should still be listed under the tree on the left. Right click on it again. This time remove the check mark and apply to all subdirectories."
Re: Intermittent problem with new build
Have you tried running memtest86 against the system, preferably overnight?

Wouldn't be the memory subsystem running with errors showing symptoms that are consistent with BSOD?
