Need advice on new NAS build

Hello, I am in the market for my very first NAS storage solution.
Having read posts on different forums I have decided to go for a custom build storage.
Here are the parts that I will be using:

    Corsair 430W Builder Series £36
    ASRock H81M-HDS Intel Socket 1150 Motherboard £36
    Intel Celeron G1820 2.7GHz Socket 1150 Dual Core £26
    Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel £38
Cooler Master N200 Mid Tower Micro-ATX Chassis £31
WD Red 3TB SATA III 3.5" HDD Drive x1 £87
    Total = approx. £260

My main concerns with this build are space, heat and Power consumption. I will be adding a second HD later on as I am on a tight budget.
Now my question is that will this setup be better than an similarly priced QNAP/Synology/Buffalo in terms of streaming HD movies, downloading etc or I am better off getting the ready made solution ?
    Please advice. Thanks

I suggest minimum 2 Hdds in raid 1
I would wait a little longer and increase the budget but watch this maybe it will help.

    Well it's not really a NAS that you're proposing there, it's a PC Server/HTPC.
You've made a good choice in my opinion, as you have a lot more flexibility with that, than you would when buying a Buffalo or similar unit.
You can install more software on it and do a lot more with it.
Stick it in a small case and hide it behind your TV. That's what I do, and mine runs 24/7, similar sort of spec to yours.

Re: Need advice on new NAS build

I am after a similar "item".

My build so far consists of the following:

be quiet! L8 300W PSU - £28 new (very efficient at low loads, close to an picoPSU + powerbrick in numbers)
AsRock H61MV-ITX 1155 Motherboard - £32 new (ITX and can take widely available 1155 CPUs, 4 SATA ports,HDMI)
Intel Celeron G1620 2.7GHz Socket 1155 - £20 new (cheapest new dual core 1155 CPU available at the time with box cooler which is literally silent at the lowest settings and low consumption=low heat)
Crucial 2GB DDR3 memory module (1333Mhz @ 1.35V) - £8 used (during testing the NAS never used more that 500MB of RAM during testing and single channel/single module with reduced voltage will help to reduce consumption)
Cooler Master Elite 120 Advance ITX - £25 new (ITX case, can take normal ATX PSU, 3 x 3.5" HDD + 5.25" position, small)
Not sure about the HDDs yet, will be 3-4x, low RPM, 5400-5900RPM (Hitachi or such)
Total = £113 plus HDD prices

Testing finished, the NAS compared to my current NAS will have loads of spare performance, plus the option to customize or use it as regular PC if I wish so.

EDIT: the eBay seller didn't had a 2GB module so I got a 4GB free of charge. Currently MemTesting at 1066Mhz with 8-8-8-24 ratings at 1.25V(!). Too bad I can't set a lower voltage.

EDIT: the Kingston DDR3 module is working with 1.25V @ 1333Mhz with 9-9-9-28 timings, error free in Memtest even after 48h.

EDIT: HDD I choose is the WD Purple, 3y warranty, nearly cheapest 3TB and happy to run 24/7.

It does sound very overpowered for a basic NAS if that is all it is going to be used for however, if you were to put FreeNAS on or the such it could become a very versatile machine. Personally I rate QNAP products extremely highly and only have praise for them but as you have stated they are expensive even just for the barebones and no HDD.

What OS are you putting on it? Definitely more a server than a NAS but that's no bad thing!

    Overpowered? - Maybe.
At the expense of noise, needless power consumption or high initial expenses? - Hardly

Can easily saturate a gigabite connection even with the CPU locked at 1.6 Ghz max.

    OS is "XPEnology".

Just need to get a power meter to accurately measure consumption... Only if I could borrow one...
