    Cool New build

Hexites, I am planning to build a rig for a mate who has seems to have more money than sense.

CASE -FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE R5 £80
    PSU -Seasonic 620W Modular £70
    MOTHERBOARD -ASROCK B150PRO £60
    CPU -i7 6700 £256
    HSF -Arctic Cooling i32 £27
    RAM -16GB Corsair LPX DDR4 £55
    DVDRW -Samsung £11
    SSD 240GB -CRUCIAL BX200 £56
    SSD 480GB -CRUCIAL BX200 £104

Case was chosen by my mate. He seems to be obsessed with this case due to the factory silencing provided.
He needs to use 3 monitors , so I went for the Pro version which has HDMI, VGA and DVI
RAM.. he reckons he needs 16GB for Photoshop ... :roll eyes:
He wanted a 1TB SSD but I advised to go for a 2 drive solution where Windows and programs can be one one drive and any documents can be on the 2nd drive.

Please review below and suggest improvements/changes/better prices? CAT, waiting for you to come by....

VGA? Ewww. I would at least go for triple digital ports even if you can't get triple HDMI 2.0/DisplayPort outputs. Looking on ASRock's website something like the H170M Pro4 for £10-15 more perhaps.

That's what partitions are for and it's not really needed these days. Post-XP versions of windows are much less likely to self-destruct than XP and older were.

I'd go for the 1TB drive, I see the argument for reducing the capacity by a quarter.

Is there any reason behind the large capacity PSU? It'll have to be too big as they don't make ATX PSUs of appropriate capacity for systems with no expansion cards but there are 300-400W options that should be registering more than single digital percentage use under everyday loads.

The i7-6700k is worth considering. Intel have gone back to their old practice of making the K models faster rather than just overclockable.

I don't see any wi-fi card there. It's well worth buying a good wi-fi adapter on a more money than sense build as it tends to be a neglected component when non-techies decide they need faster wi-fi.

Poor spec if he has more money than sense. Just saying.
No NVMe drive and internal GPU, seems low end if anything.

    Re: New build

With hard disks it was worth having the OS on its own spindle for performance, but I don't get why you would do that with an SSD where there isn't a head to thrash and slow things down.

So I would be tempted to just go with a simpler 1TB SSD.

Not sure about the model, have asked him for it. But, it is a 21in with VGA and DVI. He is going to do basic causal Photoshopping lol

If it were upto me, I would have forced him to go for a £30 cooler master case

    Re: New build

Thanks to your feedback, I have made some changes :

    CASE -TBD
PSU -Seasonic 620W Modular £70 ( 520W modular from Seasonic only costs £10 less! )
    MOTHERBOARD -ASROCK H170M PRO4 £72
    CPU -i7 6700K £276
    HSF -Arctic Cooling i32 £27
    RAM -16GB Corsair LPX DDR4 £52
    DVDRW -Samsung £11
    SSD -Samsung 1TB £240
    MONITOR - 3 X LG 22MP58VQ 22" £100 each

The Fractal design case seems to have a damn door and is massive. Thus, I need to look for a new case which is Mid-sized, has front USB 3.0 and looks like a bland office PC case ( no side window or LED fans ). Any suggestions ?

    Re: New build

Having used the Fractal R3,the soundproofing is quite decent and it blocks a lot of noise. I would also go for a core I5 as it will be fast enough. You also need enough storage for the RAWs so need at least a few terabytes of storage just in case.

The monitors are by far the most important part - you need colour accurate non-glossy monitors ideally.

    Something like a Dell U2515H.

OilSheikh, the 350D is a possibility I guess if you go for the solid version?
