16GB packs were on offer at Ebuyer, and I thought it might help OK?

Looks like we were running 6 Minecraft servers in that VM, on top of the ZoneEdit, storage, email storage with spam filtering, caching web proxy. . .

Down to just three now, lag is far better.

Have spent part of the evening getting Munin (yes the server runs that too) to monitor the Minecraft VM and user count and lag of one of the servers. The disk latency is pretty bad on that VM, coming in at 250ms despite the underlying host OS showing its RAID1 array that the VMs are on at a steady 15ms. The Minecraft VM only has 10GB out of that ram so there should be plenty of cache on the host.

Bah, it's getting late, I'm grabbing a mug of tea and going to read a book. Perhaps have another look tomorrow.
Is that old Pentium rig, socket 1155??

You can get a Core i7 2600 with 12 months(maybe 24 months but you would need to check) for around £105:

    https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SCPUINTI72600

What motherboard does it have - ATX,mATX or one of the bigger ones??

If you want something newer - you can get Haswell Core i5 CPUs from them too.

    Edit!!

Seen various Core i5 CPUs in-store for well under £100,and that is with a warranty too.

I would have to check, but it is an old Dell so not the best upgrade target: far too large to be left in the living room long term, weird bespoke components that won't fit a different case.

I am starting to wonder though if I am simply seeing the downside of virtualising the server, I suspect *any* cpu would do a stonking job if using bare metal.

Why can't the server be elsewhere?? I assume it actually can be logged in from elsewhere, without being accessed directly via a plugged-in monitor.

Plus if you have that much RAM,you might as well upgrade your current system??

Get a socket 1150 Core i5,Core i7 or Xeon E3 and a suitable motherboard?? Should be doable for around £150 or thereabouts. If you buy from CEX you get a warranty.

The Minecraft server is publicly accessible, which means it has to be in the DMZ. The VM farm on the house server all point outwards into the DMZ, the rest of the house is on the internal network and firewalled off from the DMZ so we can get to the minecraft server, but it can't get to us (standard operating procedure for any public facing box).

Why is the DMZ in the living room? Because that is where the FTTC connection can get to. Yeah, if I could stuff all this in the garage that would be great, but sadly the cabling constraints don't allow it.

From what I am seeing, upgrading the main server wouldn't help. The virtualization is, I think, trying to help the efficiency of the system but by doing so is trashing the disk latency in a way that usually doesn't matter but isn't so good for a game.

So, I think the current server could happily run Minecraft if I ran it on bare metal, but again running on the host OS would defeat the DMZ as it would be spanning firewalls at that point.

This weekend I will try and rig up a temporary machine in the DMZ. Thanks for the help, it has been useful to bounce ideas around, but right now I need to gather evidence which means another PC to run measurements from.
