    Suggestions please, first time build

So, I'm running all across the web to get suggestions for my first build, which of course happens to be a gaming focused rig.

I'm upgrading from a 2010 MacBook Pro that I've somehow managed to game on until now.

Here's a list of everything that I've chosen so far, while tying to keep to my budget of 1K.
Comments, opinions and suggestions are very, very welcome.

    PCPartPicker part list:

    CPU: Intel Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($233.89 @ OutletPC)

Looks ok to me, suspect you'll find the step up from a macbook to this will be fairly monstrous. Only thing I'd say is that 450W doesn't seem to give you much headroom for upgrades and so on.

Re: Suggestions please, first time build

    What kind of games?
Because these days a 4 thread CPU is beginning to limit games.
I'd rather buy a cheaper motherboard and the i7-7700K.
Also not sure about the power supply. If you drop to semi-modular you could get a Seasonic 550W or save $7 and get the Seasonic 450W.
Your on a tight budget, but some of the things you've chosen could easily be replaced by better options for a bit more. The difference between a 1TB and a 2TB or even 3TB HDD is very little.

Your other option might be to wait for AMD to release Ryzen 5. The Ryzen 5 1600 should be around $120 cheaper plus the motherboards are cheaper too. That's a hexcore 6C/12T chip and while it's somewhat slower at some games, the extra cores are likely to ensure it stays relevant for longer (certainly compared the i5) and should be good for minimum frames (which is far more important that average but often ignored) especially if you have anything running in the background (review sites tend to benchmark with a totally clean install without any antivirus etc.).

BTW: the done thing when asking about builds using pcpartpicker is to link to the build (even if your post count doesn't allow that, you can always just quote the last part).

EDIT: entered the whole thing in pcpartpicker, so here's the link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ytMkm8

I would wait a few weeks until the R5 1600 is released and see how it compares to the Core i5 7600K TBH!!

    Awesome, thanks for the suggestions!
Yeah I'll definitely wait until the new Ryzen chip comes out before making any final decisions.
Until then, it's constant editing this build until near perfection

From the listed shops I'm guessing you're probably in the US and those are US dollars?

You need a retail copy of Windows for personal use, the OEM licence is for systems you're selling to someone else. There's little price difference these days.

    In a non-windowed case I wouldn't bother with a Modular power supply.

I would swap the 7600k and fancy motherboard in favour of a 7400/7500 and basic board and spend the money on a half-decent monitor. I'm not familiar with your local market, but have a look at the 144hz freesync monitors.

Sell to his mother for a penny and buy it back for the same amount used, problem solved.

    Gotcha, thanks for the suggestions.
I did want a better monitor, but I wasn't sure if I wanted a bigger/better one by downgrading.
I figured I would upgrade later, considering the budget.

Alright, with the Ryzen 5 benchmarks out, I've changed over to an AMD build for future-proofing.

Apparently RAM with Samsung modules does the best and Ryzen really likes fast memory too,so I would suggest this set:

Re: Suggestions please, first time build

Are you sure you want to spend $150 on a X370 board? You could easily get a decent B350 board for about $90 or so. ATM the current Ryzen chips to have a hard clock limit of around 4GHz with the last 200MHz of that requiring a lot of extra power so best left alone. A decent B350 board should not have any problem running that 1600 at 3.8GHz with 1.25V - and at that clock it shouldn't really use any more energy than a stock R7 1800X.

As I see it, the only reason to get a fancier board is with the expectation that in the future when Zen+ or Zen2 comes out it might clock better and that's when you might want better VRMs etc. But in general 'future proofing' is not a good idea and a 6C/12T CPU should last you a while anyhow.

Use the savings to get the memory CAT recommended (or you could get the 2x4GB version of the G.SKILL for about $90 although unsure if it uses those Samsung chips).

Re: Suggestions please, first time build

Right, that comment about any board which can run 1800X being able to overclock an 1600 to 3.8GHz @ 1.25V was just a guess.
But I since looked up Hardware.fr's overclocking test for their R5 reviews
    http://www.hardware.fr/articles/959-...-pratique.html
combined with the same from their R7 tests
    http://www.hardware.fr/articles/939-...-pratique.html
Taking the 1800X and the 1600 figures you get this

So yes, 1800X default is 165.9W at the mains, and 1600 even at 1.325V and 3.9GHz is 167.6W.
