ok so it would appear I really am searching for the holy grail. You can have small but rubbish or big and good, or small and eGPU which is, shall we say, hampered. though I kind of like the thought of an NUC and eGPU enclosure.
i kind of like this case - but I can't seem to find it anywhere in the uk. It's larger than i wanted, but seems to offer excellent ease of access and portability with really good GPU cooling. I could kind of compromise on that I guess, but I'm amazed there doesn't seem to be a flat small box with the GPU simply on the side behind a mesh
watch out for expandability though. itx format can be limiting on how many drives you can add in future, or if you need a spare slot for pcie, say if USB4 comes out etc. etc. If you're considering that corsair case, is a mini ATX possibly more flexible?
How much is your budget?
If he's going small and quiet, he's not after gigaantic amounts of storage capacity and expandability, that's the price you pay for going small and compact, plus quiet. It means you're not expecting the coolest or easy to upgrade build. In fact it's always about compromise.
I've not seen much Mini-ITX gaming builds, but I've not actually searched properly to be fair and if you're going to build a Mini-ITX build, you should know what you're doing, in my opinion. If you end up choosing on a case that is larger as a Micro-ATX, then go with a micro-atx build, as it only makes sense.
Saying that, if your heart is set out for going Mini-ITX, then go for it! If you were thinking about NUC+eGPU, then the space on your desk consumed really just makes going with one of the cases I linked above, a lot more sense, without the bottlenecks. NUC+eGPU is not there yet.

No I'm after a couple of big drives - SSD and possibly NVMe / M2 if it is possible. I saw a thing on hexus a few weeks ago for a pcie card that mounts 4 of them which could be awesome if the itx board has a spare header. Which it probably won't. I should look up the specs
