Not sure if ram will drop much in price. An m.2 ssd look to the nuts though and would be the sequential upgrade.
If you want to keep a future upgrade path to an 8 core Ryzen CPU, and especially if you plan to overclock at all, I'd be very careful regard which B450 motherboard you go for. A lot of the B450 boards have quite poor VRMs that will get pretty hot & need a lot of airflow. The MSI B450 boards like the Tomahawk Max are supposed to have pretty decent VRMs though. Of course if you're going to stick with 6 core Ryzens & don't plan to overclock, the quality of the VRM is less of an issue.

Re: First Major Build In Years. Help me to future proof.

Now the mobo has gone out of stock and they're not getting any more.

    Hi,

I am afraid it does not look like we have a date of when or if these will come back in stock I am afraid.

    Kind regards,

    Technical Support Advisor
The only place I can find one for sale is Ebay Italy and I'm not sure I want to go that way TBH plus it's more expensive plus shipping. Which leaves only these boards supporting AM4 and PCI:

    Asus PRIME B350-PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard £95.62
    Biostar B350GT5 ATX AM4 Motherboard £146.62
    Asus PRIME X370-A ATX AM4 Motherboard £115.11

I wanted the X470 chipset as it's cheaper than X570 and needs no fan. Are any of the above 3 boards any good? Will they even work with a 3600?

    What about B350 or X370?

Can someone recommend a good mobo with high quality headphone output? I'm looking at an Asus Prime X470-Pro ATX AM4 Motherboard. I've ordered a Case and PSU.

Re: First Major Build In Years. Help me to future proof.

You can get ddr4-3600 for a fraction cheaper, https://m.cclonline.com/product/2989...7U7OYaL3X8wMsQ.

I put that in my Ryzen 3600 build a couple of weeks ago, it's hynix C die and works at CL16 timings if you're interested in tweaking.

I think it's worth spending a little more to get the right item.

I watched both vids and I feel like I'm more up to speed on RAM for Ryzen builds. According to the second video, for the 3600 CPU I've chosen, DDR3200 or DDR3400 is the sweet spot. Is it worth looking for DDR3400 CAS16 RAM?

Re: First Major Build In Years. Help me to future proof.

People seem to swear by the ryzen Dram calculator from what I've seem online; it seems to recommend timings to set you memory to.

From what I gather you want Samsung b-die for best OCing. The 8pack ram is 2x the price of c16 ram; it is c14 and b die. Some c15 sets come in at just over £50 if you keep your nose to the ground.

For £50 more how close could you get to the 3700 instead of a 3600. That seems a better move than going c14 to c15. A cheaper PSU at about 450 to 500w would be more friendly on the pocket.

There are a fair few feature comparisons of all the am4 motherboards out there.

If you already have a noctua cooler, have you looked for an AM4 mounting bracket for it? Noctua are meant to be good at that kind of aftersales support.

The 8 core ryzen chips are incredibly frugal with power, basic VRMs will run them fine. A 3800X without PBO will take less power than the i7 920, and VRMs on the old boards were never that amazing. Even A320 boards run the full AM4 product stack, including the 3950X

It's all together and running windows. I haven't done any tuning yet except slowing the fan profiles down which has made it nice and quiet under low loads.

I'm using the box CPU cooler for now but I'm going to change it as I don't like the sound when under load. I've seen that Noctua may send a free bracket to fit my existing CPU cooler. I'm wondering if heatpipes wear out. Will they still work as well after 11 years? I would probably want to put new fans on the cooler as they will likely be past their best plus I'm not sure if they will be PWM type.

I've been saying that for months now, but it hasn't been annoying *enough* for me to crack the case open, despite a replacement cooler being sat behind me

Heatpipes don't have moving parts and I don't believe they lose fluid over time. You should be OK.

Noctua offer a free AM4 mounting kit if you can provide your original invoice as proof of purchase, took about a week from application to delivery for me, back in July.

    Order is for free here:

Here is is looking nice in white.

I enabled DOCP in the BIOS to run the ram at it's XMP timings and it made the system unstable so I've got that back at auto settings and it's running at 2400. I need to look into the timings more. Apart from that it's running well.
