I just wanted a sanity check on perhaps the cheapest build I will have done so far.
With plenty of time on my hands I decided to do the e-waste run while visiting the industrial estate, on making my deposit I had a gander into what was being disposed of. My eyes wandered and a silvery flash caught my eye. I peered harder and spotted a box of lenovo e-waste. My small arms were unable to reach the object of interest; I commandeered a broom from the yard and with a few attempts my prize was in hand.
I fled the scene having contributed to the environment. Arrived home and lunched planning my afternoon of entertainment.
I excitadly checked the machine for damage and water marks. the PC looked barely used. Of course upon powering on nothing happened, dead.
everything unplugged, only mobo and psu, nothing, no fan spin- Anything could be deaded.
Reseted CMOS
Different psu although the 10 pin was fudged from one half of a 24. Neyt
PSU jumped with paperclip and fan spun. Yay - Assume PSU OK
PSU MOBO shorted motherboard headers. Rien - assume on/off switch is not problem.
CPU, GPU and RAM (oem single stick of 2400 8gb ewww) tested in other machine. Both good.
Assumption therefore - ewaste motherboard with 10pin power in is the culprit.
Any ideas if I missed anything?
I currently have:-
RX 550 (with VGA out; I have access to a 24" HD VGA only monitor)
Ryzen 1400
8gb 2400 DDR4
2TB HDD - not tested. i will have a look on a live distro when I get time and format it.
M2 (seems to be universal but need to look) wifi card
8gb ram.
ewaste case, I assume that it is not going to be standard form factor.
PSU with one 4pin PSU and one 10 pin cable.
some random card reader.
I currently have a couple of options
1) replace the MOBO for about £40 - more ewaste
2) Buy a 320, 350, 450 mobo for about £30 and get a £20-£30 psu, hoping the case will be standard form factor. (I could always get the tape measure out). I can mess around with the header to get the power switch to work.
3) make another skip run and hope I am more successful.
Option 2 looks good. Option 3 will depend on the tide line of ewaste to whether I can reach anything. If you got this far; then thank you for time.
