New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Hi

I got my 3xs system few days ago and all was well until I encountered blue screen saying something about kernel_data_inpage and ntfs.sys while downloading my previous purchases via itunes. Standard post-crash chkdsk find nothing serious but when I checked S.M.A.R.T data I found warning regarding Current Pending Sector

    Code:
    img10.imageshack.us/img10/1006/smart1q.png
    Error scan found bad sector

    Code:
    img69.imageshack.us/img69/471/hdtunec.png
Since then Current Pending Sector rose from 1 to 16

    Code:
    img10.imageshack.us/img10/9301/smart2.png
Samsung diagnostic tool confirmed these problems

    Code:
    img809.imageshack.us/img809/3930/estool.jpg
I also noticed that Raw Read Error Rate rose from 1 after BSOD to 94 today

    Code:
    img810.imageshack.us/img810/9901/hdtune3l.png
    It doesn't look too good

Another problem (?) I encountered is that on two occasions my PC restarted itself while booting - I pressed the on/off button, fans started to spin and after a moment all stopped just to boot normally after a second... Before first occurrence I messed with BIOS boot priority (after booting CD with Samsung disk tool) so maybe it was due to this? As for second one I think that the day before I also entered BIOS to check something...

Please help , thank you in advance.

I got new HDD, works OK, thanks...
But the power on problem... it happened again today's morning... Can it be due to the fact it was disconnected from the outlet for the night?

Re: New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Hi

Yes, this is a well-known behaviour, especially on Intel chipsets.

It starts because for different reasons a piece of data is incorrect while the motherboard is booting up, so in order to ensure stability it restarts the machine and clears that data away.

    Regards

    Ben

Re: New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Ok, thanks.

Unfortunately I had the following BSOD today...

    Code:
    Stop Error/BugCheck: 0x124
    Parameter/Argument 1: 0x0 0000000, Machine Check Exception
    Parameter/Argument 2: 0xfffffa8009714028 9714028, Address of the WHEA_ERROR_RECORD structure.
    Parameter/Argument 3: 0xbe200000 e200000, High order 32-bits of the MCi_STATUS value.
    Parameter/Argument 4: 0x5110a 005110a, Low order 32-bits of the MCi_STATUS value.
    Probable Cause hardware
    (minidump file: pozmu.net/dump.dmp )

So this is 3rd BSOD on this computer: 1st was HDD related, second one was very mysterious and left no log/minidump and this is third

Re: New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Hi Pozmu,

Sorry to hear you are still experiencing problems. I'll look into your settings tomorrow and mail you directly.

Were you using the overclock setting when the latest BSOD occurred?

Also can you confirm you are not using any kind of power saving features... Sleep / Hibernate / Screensavers etc..

    Regards,
    Rob @ Scan

    Hi

    Got your mail, thanks.
I'm not using any power saving features besides turning monitor off after X minutes... I disabled it for now, but I'm not sure it can really hurt... can it? Same for screen saver - can it really interfere with overclock?

    Thanks

Re: New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Hi,

Screensaver and turn monitor off after x mins are probably the least likely of the power saving features to cause any problems, but it has been known for them to cause issues! Sleep / Hibernate / power off HDD are the main culprits of BSOD's on overclock settings.

We have a script you can run to disable everything on this thread: http://forums.hexus.net/scan-3xs-sys...ocked-pcs.html

Try the settings i mailed you, and let me know how you get on.

    Regards,

    Hi

We have seen Screensavers and Desktop slideshows cause Overclocking crashes and if you run the scipt Rob emailed you the link to (instructions in zip file) this will give you the correct power saving options disabled

    Regards

    Ben

Re: New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Hi

If you are using the system for games and applications when it is overclocked and you get blue screens try the standard bios profile as not all games and apps run stable overclocked

It happens outside games as well - in fact it only occurred during gaming once, and it was after I ALT-TABbed to desktop

Re: New system - Blue screen & bad sector on disk

    Hi Pozmu

Please make sure you load the bios profile as the dump file error code may refer to voltages and if the bios profile is not loaded this could cause the issue

    Profile 1 - Standard
    Profile 2 - Overclocked

The other possibility is a thermal issue and as we have just had a mini heat wave have you got a cool room for the PC as there have been a lot overheating?

You can try loading the Standard Profile as well if the issues persist to see if it is the voltages on the overclock and if so we can give you some more settings to try

    Regards

    Ben
