"You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it"

    Hello

My Scan PC arrived this morning and all seemed well.

Before installing software, one of the first things I did was plug in my external hard drive to copy some data onto the PC (Hitachi Touro Mobile 1TB USB3).

This was connected to a USB3 port at the front of the machine. I plugged it in and it said it was installing the device. It looked ok - so I tried to copy a folder across. After a few seconds, it stopped - and gave this error message: "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it".

Over the next hour or two, I tried using the drive again in the usb3 port at various points. Sometimes the same error comes up instantly. Sometimes it takes 20-30 mins before it comes up.

This was odd for 2 reasons:
    1) The same drive works fine on my other Windows 7 PC and Win XP PCs - never had this error before
    2) When I plug the drive into a USB2 port on the Scan PC, I don't seem to get the error and it works fine.

Which leads me to believe that there is something up with the USB3 on this Scan PC - either power management? or motherboard drivers?

I would be most grateful for any suggestions.

Many thanks - I am desperate to take advantage of USB3's higher data transfer rates!

    Hi

Are you using the USB 3 on the rear or on the front?

    Regards

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

I was using USB3 on the front (there are 2 blue ports).

When plugging into USB2 on the rear, it is fine - I know it is usb2 since a message comes up saying I should use USB3 for faster transfer rates.

Would you advise that I try a USB3 port on the rear?

    Thanks for the quick response.

    Hi Ben

A quick update: have tried connecting the external hard drive to one of the rear USB3 ports - and have just transferred lots of data - the rear ports seem fine.

    So in summary:
    - Rear usb 2 and 3 ports seem fine.
    - It is the 2 front usb3 ports that seem to be the problem (the case is Corsair Carbide 500R).

    Thanks.

Someone in this thread had problems with a flash drive on the front ports, related maybe? Not sure if it got resolved :-

Re: "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it"

Thanks Jon - I think Zenin mentions a problem in his last post with usb3 on the front panel not working... so could be related hmmm

I have done some more reading and found this:
    http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?p=591503
where it is mentioned that one front panel usb port works and one doesnt.

That is the next thing for me to test -is it one or both front ports causing the problem...
I will test that tonight after my data finishes copying over.

Re: "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it"

    Another update:
Just spent 90 mins approx copying my data to the PC using the rear USB3 port and the Hitachi Touro usb3 portable drive - no problems.

As a further test, I plugged the Hitachi drive into the right front usb3 port - immeadiately, it doesnt like it - and loses connection with the drive during the copying process. It then recognises the drive again. I safely remove the drive.

This time I plug it into the left front usb3 port - and copy 10GB worth of files as a test... No problems it seems....

So in conclusion: it looks like the front right USB3 port has the problem.

    Another update:
Next I test the front left and right usb3 ports using a USB2 memory stick - both the front left and right USB3 ports are fine with it.

    So finally:
I get an old Usb2 external hard drive out. It works fine in both the front left and right USB3 ports.

So in final conclusion, the Hitachi USB3 portable drive doesn't like the front right USB3 port - but is fine with the front left USB3 port and the rear usb2 and 3 ports....

Not sure what to make of it... except that perhaps the front right usb3 port doesn't like usb3 devices?

I have a USB3 memory stick soon to arrive - I will test that out too on the front right USB3 port and report my findings this week.

Re: "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it"

    Update 31/7/12 AM:

Just incase yesterday was a fluke, I tried to test again. The usb3 hitachi drive still doesnt like copying files on the front right usb3 port, but is happy on the front left USB port.

That USb3 memory stick hasnt arrived yet, so cant test that. Hopefully tomorrow.

(Sorry if this all sounding longwinded - am using this space as a test log of sorts to record what I do)

Have you opened the case to make sure the front right port is properly connected at both ends?
