Signs of a dying HDD

The HDD in the above build is displaying the first symptoms of death; unreadable file records on boot, chkdsk errors and now it has started failing the WD Data Lifeguard short tests.

The drive contains sensitive data and would need to be zeroed before I return it for replacement. I know from previous experience you do not send a replacement before you receive the faulty item (I think this is the same for 3XS systems?), so would it be possible to purchase a new HDD to enable me to mirror the failing HDD and then have the cost refunded when you receive the failing HDD?
