Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

Hey guys, this is the build i'm looking at for the new year.

Case: Coolermaster RC-1100 V2 Cosmos S (Sport) Black Silent Full Tower Case (£137.00)
    Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe, Intel X58, Sok 1366, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 1066/1333/1600(OC)
    CPU: Intel i7 920, Nehalem, 2.66GHz, 4.8GT/s QPI, 8MB Cache, Retail (£207.17)
CPU Cooler:Thermalright TRUE Copper All Copper Design 120mm Heat Sink (£63.99)
    Overclocking: 3XS System Core-Logic Overclocking*10 - 20%* (£80.00)
    Memory: 6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333) CAS 9-9-9-24 (£139.00)
    Graphics card: 1GB XFX GTX 280, 2210MHz GDDR3, 602MHz GPU, 240 Cores (Far Cry2 Included while stocks last) (£269.28)
PSU: 1000W Corsair HX Series Modular (Dual Graphics Cards SLI / Crossfire) (£159.10)
System Drives: 1000 GB Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black, 7200 rpm, 32MB Cache (£83.97)
Flash Drive: Akasa 3.5" Internal Multi Memory Card reader & USB 2.0 Port (£7.59)
    DVD Writer: Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±R, 12x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6 (£15.89)
    No Sound card
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bit (£76.89)

I've just got some questions regarding a few aspects of the build.

I've read the customPC review of a i7 system, and said you managed to overclock the 920 to 3.7ghz, if i get it overclocked, could i expect to have these speeds or there abouts?

The cpu cooler, the TRUE Copper, i've read is very heavy, and is not really recommended for a vertical tower, would you recommend the Ultra 120 over this because of the weight issue?
i'm really looking for the best air cooling available as i don't mind paying extra for the TRUE Copper if its better, just as long as you feel the motherboard can withstand the weight.

Another question about the case, i've done some research and there are spaces for 3 extra 120mm fans under the top cover, and another underneath, will you put all the fans in (are they included) or will i have to pay extra to get the fans inserted?

    Thanks Ruben

And a happy new year to you all!

You are paying £80 for someone to overclock it for you?

I know the answer to the last question is you'll have to pay extra, they dont come with the case.

The overclock is very possible yes, but wether or not Scan overclock to the highest possible or not i don't know

    It's 4.98*

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

    @Haiku32

i know its alot, but i would rather have some professionals do it for me, then inadvertantly pushing things too far on the voltages and frying the cpu.
i guess this way i can see what they've done, and try to tweak it from there to get a bit more performance, plus i can always fall back on their overclock.

About the fans, i thought as much, i'll just add them in, make sure with Scan first.

    Any ideas about the cooler?
can't find much about it online, not many reivews either...

In regards to adding your own fans, am not sure, but I think if you open the case yourself, you void any warranty.

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

If i open the case it will void the warranty?

That's insane, first of all the system gets shipped with bubble wrap on the inside to protect the hardware, so if i open it up and remove the bubble wrap it voids the warranty, that makes no sense to me.

plus people like to add graphics cards or extra memory and drives, so i don't think it voids it.

i could be completely wrong, but i think the warranty only covers the things that get shipped with it, so if the graphics card dies, i can get a new one, but the things i add, won't be covered.

ps i don't mean to come across aggressive, just no better way to put it

    happy new year too

If the graphics card dies then it's under warranty

Apologies, should have worded it better. I believe if you open the system and mess around/ install any hard, it may void the warranty. But I don't know.

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

Firstly Happy New Year All !!!

yupyupno its good to hear your considering buying a 3XS system...

    In answer to your questions,

If you picked the 920 we would over clock it as per the Custom PC review so 3.7 GHz

We can ship the system with the true copper, saying that I have personally felt the weight of the thing and it is really heavy, taking everything into consideration I would personally opt for the Ultra 120mm.

We can install additional fans, you would however need to purchase them, the Cosmos S will fit 3 fans into the roof of the system, I would recommend Red LED ones to match the rest of the case.

Opening the side of the case does NOT void any warranty, neither would adding any additional hard disks, optical drives or expansion cards after all its your system. If you have any of these you would like installing into the system we can make arrangements to have them shipped to scan and we will install them at no additional cost.

If there is anything else you want to know just give me a shout

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

Apologies if I caused any misunderstanding or whatever Vadmin/ Philipp, I always assumed that opening a PC would void warranty, then again, I should have realised, that a 3XS system, is essentially, a users system, that they would have built, just built for them.

Never the less, great service indeed.

Hey no worries mate, No need to apologise..... If I was purchasing a system I would assume the same.

All our systems are custom built, we will always try to be as accommodating as possible.

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

Thanks Phillip, about the cooling, what are your feelings about the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366?

I believe its the first cooler made specifically for the i7's, all others need adapters to fit, would this provide better cooling than the TRUE 120?

and if so, could i use this instead of the TRUE 120?

I was thinking about buying it in all one lump sum, like i had with my last 3xs, but have decided to go down the finance route, so i can spread the costs over 9 months, this would hopefully mean that i can be a little more aggressive with my specs.

would you recommend the 965 over the 920, what is the difference between them clock for clock, and what type of overclock could you guys get with the 965?

also i'm a fan of maxishine (guy of youtube) he has the 965 with the rampage extreme, would that be a more suitable mobo for the 965?

I would like to spend no more than 2200 pounds for the system, so if you can suggest better components for around that price, i'll be happy to take them into consideration

    Thanks, Ruben aka yupyupno

The 965 is faster at stock onbviously, but wether you need the extra speed for the extra price is another matter, what is the computer for? The rampage extreme offers nothing else over the P6T Deluxe really

    It's 4.98*

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

The Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 should be a good cooler as are the rest of Noctua products, its good to see a range of coolers appearing for S1366.

This cooler can be used that’s not a problem; it will be added as an option on the 3XS site shortly.

We have found that the 920 over clocked offers a much better price/performance ratio than using a 965,

I would save the £600 difference and stick with the over clocked 920, a 3.7Ghz Core I7 is going to be plenty fast enough...

Maybe look at upgrading to an SLI configuration using two cards; this is going to offer better performance in games than a higher clocked CPU (depending on monitor size/resolution).

We could also offer a water cooled option for your CPU if required.

I am presuming that the system is to be used as a gaming rig??

    Feel free to correct me

    Best Regards

Re: Need help with 3XS build and some questions :)

yeah, it will be my gaming rig

i already have a bfg 280, so it will be sli when i get my hands on it

i game at 1920x1080, so sli will be perfect, tri sli is over kill imo

how much better would water cooling be?
as i've found this video http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/articl...50aHVzaWFzdA==

the temps are not much different to air, and i'd want the best cooling available.

ok so i'll stick the 920, and p6t deluxe

Phillip, do you mean i should pm you, or just post here?
