    Re: Clocker 1 - X58 Core i7 Build

Hi guys , hope your all well ? sorry not been around but Ive been unwell due to my treatment . I have a couple of noob questions ( sorry in advance ) #1 I have never used " Acronis true image home 2009 " before can anyone give me the basics ? as i was wondering if i need to do a system restore for any reason how to do it ? . As on my Vadim system i have an external HD that came with the system ( pre installed with XP & Vista ) which i use for backups / restores etc , and that's the method I've used for a while and am happy doing as all i have to do if i need to do a full system restore is put in vista CD , plug in HD , remember to tick " yes " under " format & repartition HD and wait for restart ! so i was wondering how to do this on my new Scan system ? I apologize for such basic noob questions but my memory / concentration is all over the shop due to this treatment , I'm not with it at all ( well that's my excuse ) . I would be really grateful for any help at all , Many Thanks

    Re: Clocker 1 - X58 Core i7 Build

Hope you start to feel better soon, Clocker.

I use Acronis True Image and it really is pretty easy. Basically it will make an "image" of a hard drive partition or the whole hard drive if you like (which may have more than one partition). Think of this image as a "snapshot" of everything - files, folders, settings, program installations, all of Windows' hidden system files/registry, hardware drivers, the lot. A fully working Windows, in effect. This image is saved somewhere as your backup and should ideally be stored on another physical drive. If you run into trouble you can either "browse" the image from within Acronis to pick out and restore selected data from individual files/folders (it does this by "mounting" the image as a temporary, virtual drive for you to browse through) -or- you can restore the whole image which will replace the entire contents of your current partition/s with the content stored in the image.

It's like a backup on steroids because it can restore not just data files but your whole operating system, installed programs, settings etc. if needs be. The full system restore can be useful in situations where:
    a) Windows has become infected/corrupted/unstable/slow and a full format/re-install is called for
    b) The hard disk has died and you need to get a new one (simply restore the saved image onto the new drive, partitioned to match the dead drive, and you're good to go).

My main use of True Image has been to create an image of my system drive (C:\) after a clean install of Windows (XP in my case) and some preliminary updates and customisations. Such an image takes up less than 2GB of space on my second, backup hard drive. If and when the time comes for me to have a major spring clean and start again with XP all I have to do is backup any essential data files then replace my C: partition with the image contents. This saves me time installing XP normally then having to add a trillion online updates and other tedious tasks that have to be done before you can get started with the OS. There will still be some newer online updates to add but not nearly as many as starting from scratch! This type of restore is easily accomplished by booting from the Acronis CD, navigating to the image required, instructing the program to restore the image then going off for a nice cup of tea while the OS and all my initial tweaks and preferences are restored.

As with all backups, however, it's only as good as the last time it was run, so if you want to use this as a general backup for your data files as well then you will need to run it regularly. And, of course, if you image a corrupted/infected Windows those unwanted problems will also be restored so do keep a couple of images if you can, including an early "lean, mean and clean" version to fall back on if needs be or one of a system that you know is working properly. I have something else that I use for general file backup purposes and just use Acronis to keep a couple of basic images of a "clean" system drive before it has become too cluttered by program installs etc.

I hope this will give you some idea of how it works anyway, and that it makes some sense to your poor, befuddled brain.
