    Question Advice please..

    Hello to you all!!

I would like to get your opinion on my current dilemma. I am a part time music producer that has not made any productions for quite some time now!
I have an old Pentium 4 3.2 PC with 1gb of ram running Cubase SX2 with a range of outboard gear (Effects, Mixing Desk etc).

I intend to get going again with some productions and would like to upgrade my hardware and software. I have my eye on the Core i7 3XS X58 system as it will I like having the latest technology, it will last me quite some time (like my P4 system!!) and it will handle anything I throw it at it.

However, there is the sensible side of me saying that this system maybe overkill for the use that I intend which will really be for Cubase, audio editing, the odd video editing and to use with Flight simulator (on the high settings).
Is it worth upgrading this system or should I look at a Core 2 dual or Quad core system.

Your response to this would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi there,

I've gotta admit I run a studio much like yours (Cubase, 3.2 p4 chip and stack of hardware) and it still does the job. But then again I work outside of the box for everything but editing and sequencing.

I've been playing around with video processing on it through and if you want to do any editing I 'd say go for as much power as you can lay your hands on!

My second box for gaming and design work is a Q6600 based rig and even on there if i'm doing video work and cutting up on the fly it will stop to re-rendor the video which annoys me a bit. I know from speaking to people here too, that flight sim will eat up any spare processor time you have no matter what set up you have so if you want to max it out, once more I'd say go for the i7 solution.

To be honest if your going for a p45 solution the's only a couple of hundred quid between the two and the performance increase you see in real terms is worth more than that. If you can afford to i7 it and have the call for it (which I think you may with the video stuff) then go for it!
