How about a FAQ for this forum?

One more feedback idea for the Scan bods to chew over - how about an FAQ sticky topic in this forum to answer a few general questions prospective customers are likely to have? Some of the questions I thought of are as follows, no doubt there are, or will be others.

    Ordering/configuration questions:

    - I don't see what I want on the configurator, can I choose another graphics card or upgrade the case with different fans?

    - Can I get my hard disk partitioned?

    - Can I fit my own DVD burner/hard drive? Will this invalidate my warranty?
Maybe a note that customer can send in the hardware to be fitted or, if it's to be a DIY job, they would be well advised to state their requirements so suitable cables can be wired up neatly and made available to them.

    - Do you supply Windows with a proper CD?

    - Do you configure new PCs with all the latest BIOS, drivers and Windows updates?
I know this information is covered elsewhere if you look around the 3XS pages but it might be useful to have this repeated here?

    - How much do you overclock the Core i7 CPU's by? Will I be supplied with information on the settings used?
Some facts and general info on the various flavours of Core i7 would be helpful

    - I'm wary about overclocking. Is it safe? What about stability and heat issues?
Perhaps some reassurances on these matters would help.

    - How are systems tested before shipping? Will I get the results of these tests?
Notes on programs used to stress test perhaps?

    - How long does it take to build, test and ship a system?

    Post delivery questions:

    - Why does a large chunk of my hard drive space seem to be missing?
This is sure to come up again - some info on the Acronis backup would be helpful, I think.

    - Do I need to keep the boxes and packaging my system arrived in?
Answer may help customers understand why this would be a Good Idea.

    What do you guys think?

On a completely different matter: I just placed an order for a system plus some other items. At one point I was offered the opportunity to ship everything together or split the order... I noticed a small spelling mistake on the website that really should be corrected:

"Show me In stock and Pre-Order items seperate with individual carriage costs"
... this is an all too common mistake but the word should read: "separate"

Re: How about a FAQ for this forum?

Probably needs a quick run down on things such as "how much memory do I need?" and "what cpu do I need?" as well as "what graphics card?" and "What PC Case do I need?". That should fill most people's questions on a bespoke system.

It's probably best to go through the configurator and make an FAQ question about it .

The subforum for system builds, pictures, specifications and performance scores might need something like a database table of sorts. Lets say someone wanted to build a PC for rendering small lumps of data quickly - a simple table of Corei7 with 3GB ram at tight timings, Corei7 with 6GB ram at slightly laxer timings and some AMD equivilents using benchmarks of either compressing using winrar or sisoft sandra test etc. The last thing this particular kind of person may wish to see is sit and wait for lots of high res pics to download. im not sure how you would go about doing this unless you have one main sticky thread with links to system build specs and pictures and another link to system build specs comparative benchmark scores.

Glad you think the FAQ is a good idea, Phil ~ sorry about the extra work but someone has to keep you on your toes, hehe.

I thought of another question for the FAQ:

    - What is RAID and do I need it?
This one is a useful answer to know because when ordering a system with two identical HDDs the customer is asked straight away if they want them configured for Raid.

PS. Did you make a note of the spelling mistake I mentioned on the website?

Just a thought but if a lot of the FAQs relate to after-sales type stuff would it not be an idea to create a printable copy of these to ship with the systems?

Re: How about a FAQ for this forum?

On more possible question for the FAQ:

    - What are the delivery charges for a 3XS system?
Maybe this depends on system size and weight but an approximate guide to the courier charges would be helpful in the FAQ. Maybe a mention too of the free delivery deal for Hexus members with the requisite number of forum posts?
