what's the latest on 4gb memory modules
Very happy with my i7 machine from 3xs which I've had since March 2009.
Came with 3gb, then I put in 6gb (3 x 2) more, total = 9gb
I need more for the image processing I'm doing for my phd. Greedy I know. I either replace the 1gb modules with 2gb modules (cost around £100, perhaps I can sell the old ones) but it'd be nice to put in some 4gb modules. But I don't know if these are made or if anyone's buying them. One day it might be nice to have more than 12gb of ram.
Any inside knowledge on 4gb modules for my corei7 mobo (DDR3 whatever that means...)
Thanks

Re: what's the latest on 4gb memory modules
Thanks. Will that work on my triple channel ex58-ud4 motherboard? I don't understand what this triple channel nonsense is....
I have six memory slots and they are currently filled up, 2,1,2,1,2,1
Would 4,2,4,2,4,2 work ? Would it matter if they were different brands, as long as the speed is OK?
Re: what's the latest on 4gb memory modules
Ideally you'd want a kit that's tested to work together, but at the moment they're very expensive for 4gb modules (they do exist though). In reality you just need to make sure that you run them at the lowest common denominator in terms of speed and loosest timings etc.
4,2,4,2,4,2 would work - each channel would consist of one 4gb module and one 2gb, thus it's all balanced.
Triple channel basically means there are three pipes to transfer data down.
Re: what's the latest on 4gb memory modules
OK Thanks. Looks like my best option at the moment is to replace the three 1gb modules with 2gb modules.
The last ones I bought (according to my scan invoice) were:
6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-1 1 £100.87
Another email from the same time says:
Product Number CM/CMX6GX3M3A1600C9
Product Desc. 6GB 3x2 CMX6GX3M3A1600C9 XMS3
Quantity 1
Price Each 100.87
Serial Number 4313253034
I searched scan's site for CMX6GX3M3A1600C9 but that turned up nothing. How are we meant to link previous orders to current stock so we can replace or repeat purchase items?
None of my order emails appear to state the speed of the memory. I wonder why that is?
Re: what's the latest on 4gb memory modules
Model number tells you it's 1600Mhz CAS 9.
The stuff linked to above is 1333Mhz CAS 9, which could work fine, depending at what speed your current RAM is running at.
If not, you'd need to get 1600Mhz stuff, which is like £260 - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/8GB-(...4-XMP-DHX-165V
Re: what's the latest on 4gb memory modules
Except the core i7 9xx doesn't support 1600mhz* RAM, so will only run it at 1333 speeds anyway unless you overclock the CPU.
*800mhz in reality.
