GW2 - build me a PC that can run this

    Dear Scan/Hexus/All,

Recently, Guild Wars 2 has been hit by some kind of FPS disease. I don't know what or why (and this occurred even before they - Anet - removed culling) this has happened. So...

Please recommend me a rig/build that will/does play this game well.

    Many thanks.

(My current Scan machine is an i7 980x @ 4ghz, an ATi 5970, 6gig RAM, a 10K Velociraptor, a 60gig SSD, and some other stuff. Technically, this should run the game just fine but it doesn't - it flips between 7FPS in busy/complex areas to 25 in the wilderness. It used to be silky smooth until about 2 months ago).

Unfortunately all the benchmarks that I can find for Guild Wars 2 date back to August 2012, i.e. well before the patch you think has caused the performance issues for you.

However, I can see a bazzillion threads from other GW2 players complaining about performance issues, particularly during World v World events so it would be hard for us to spec up a rig that would definitely sold these issues. i.e. it seems like the GW2 devs are aware of the issues, but haven't said what is causing them.

What sort of budget did you have in mind for upgrading or a new rig?

I suspect that your HD5970 might be the limiting factor especially if Crossfire scaling is poor with the game:

I would probably consider a new graphics card.

According to the system requirements for the GW2, your system shouldn't have any difficulties running this game.

I agree with both comments already posted and would spend some time testing before investing in more hardware, trying different drivers for GPU, maybe even turn down your settings (a comment that no PC owner appreciates) etc.

I'd agree with the above, about the graphics card being the limiting factor here...

My system is generally pretty inferior to the OP's apart from the GPU, I'd say - i7-920 @ 2.66Ghz, 12GB DDR3-1333, 7200rpm SATA2 HDD, GTX670. However, mine runs GW2 at around 55-60fps in wilderness, dropping to around 20fps in "major" events like the end-fight of each of the recent invasion-events.

I used to have the CPU overclocked to 3.36GHz per core, and GW2 slightly better then (it does seem to be quite dependent on CPU, but the GPU will definitely be making some difference), but I've not got round to re-doing the overclock since my last rebuild, as I'm looking at purchasing one of the overclock-bundles soon anyway.

Re: GW2 - build me a PC that can run this

    Great replies, thanks all.

As to budget, I don't really have one although, realistically, I'd consider ~3K would give me a nice build.

Having said that, you guys have commented on the possible bottleneck of my 5970. I was considering bagging myself a GTX 780 with a Twin Frozr cooler but, even then, there've been reports of the 780 having issues. If top hardware like that can't run the game with all the bells and whistles on, I feel Anet are shooting themselves in the foot a little.

    Anyway, thanks again.
