What security software do you use?
Scan is always looking for improve the range of products we offer to customers. If you could answer this brief poll it would be really appreciated.
If you also have time to post why you bought/selected the software that you do use that would be really great.
Thanks in advance :)

Re: What security software do you use?
Kaspersky, get it free from the bank. Did a bit of research and decided top go with it over MSE, have used most of the free options in the past, but would normally recommend MSE or Avast due to my experience with them.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Same as Flibb, Kaspersky because I get it free from the bank, however I did buy Bitdefender in the past due to really good test results but found it had a serious problem with it locking the PC up after it did a idle time scan.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Kaspersky internet security.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Currently Kaspersky as it come free with mobo, usually AVG Free.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
AVG, KIS, MBAM, Avast, depends on which computer and the Operating System and person involved.
avast caused blue screens on this computer (one in 'my system'), mums has avast on because she doesn't like the look of AVG, KIS is on another computer. MBAM is on all of them.
depends on what type of security on what computer.
main one is AVG though so that's what I ticked on the poll.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Currently using Avast since I did a quick google and it seemed to be 'better' than the new AVG. Don't always have any security software (went a year+ without any before realising and it scanned ok when I did get some) But I figure I may as well, no real downside.
Obviously using the free version though :P
-
Re: What security software do you use?
you missed zonelabs off that list, not that i use them anymore, but some might
-
Re: What security software do you use?
MSSE. Free and doesn't clutter my machine up.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Kaspersky pure v3.0 and malwarebytes
-

Unfortunately polls on Hexus are limited to a maximum of 10 options so I couldn't list every brand.
Thanks for your input though and to everybody else so far.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Avast free, Spybot and Malwarebytes. Unfortunately from the point of view of Scan I have never thought it necessary to buy security software. That said an all in one solution that stopped my elderly parents clicking OK and installing every toolbar known to man would be attractive -ideally a one off payment type programme rather than a subscription though.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I've been using MS Security Essentials for the last couple of years with no issues yet .
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Bullguard on the one and the other trend micro.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
-
Re: What security software do you use?
MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes in combination for me, do a manual scan with both when I feel it may be necessary and so far so good, nothing's got past them. I've tried a few of the others mentioned in the poll over the years but didn't like them for various reasons...
-
Re: What security software do you use?
AVG Free, used it for years now and never had any problems, it runs transparently and doesnt hog resources.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Using AVG atm. Previously used MSE because it seemed to simple and effective (and not a resource hog). But had some weird issues lately and ran AVG and it caught 2 trojans.... un-installed MSE right away.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
As others have mentioned MSE (Defender on 8.1) and regular scans with malwarebytes
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I've used different ones over the years. for a long time Norton was the default, but they stuffed it up with the awful 2006 version or thereabouts. Know people who still use it, it's got better again, but not sure on its footprint these days. For a while it was a bit of a resource hog.
Tried McAfee - nothing but misery there. Avoid at all costs IMO.
Zonelabs did ok but they botched a version a year or so ago and machine wouldn't remember custom settings.
Kaspersky I've experienced in 4 different generations on machines over the past 7 years. It could sometimes be difficult to find out what the heck it is doing, though the last time I used it it had got a lot better (more sensible settings by default) than it was back in say 2008.
Am watching this thread with interest! I just don't trust leaving a machine on MS for too long. Maybe I'm too used to the mantra of independent AV+Firewall the college used to insist on back when I was a student
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Ms defender built in to windows 8.1 plus superantispyware and malwarebytes.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Another one not on the list - I use F-Secure
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Used Kaspersky for 3 years then went over to McAfee which I have been using for 2 years and which I have been very happy with.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
What are peoples thoughts on Avast, I have it installed on my laptop and frankly I hate it. Seems to have such an impact on startup time. Just glad I never use my laptop anymore :)
-
Re: What security software do you use?
It looks like MSE has lost a lot of ground over the last year or two. I've tried Norton and McAfee as of recent and personally prefer Norton.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I'm using MSE but I am thinking about either Kaspersky if I can still get it free through my Bank or ESET as the AV is based on the Nod32 engine.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
My Linux server uses Clam AV and various security measures to provide authentication and intruder detection services. (Fail2ban, SASL, SSH) I also run two levels of firewall, protection, one on the gateway and one on the server itself.
I use Clam X av on OSX and MSE on my windows machine. The best protection is monitoring system logs and being very circumspect about opening e mails.

I know this is an old thread but i use Comodo Internet Security (free version) and Malwarebytes
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I use Norton internet security for firewall and daily scans along with Malwarebyte free scanner which I use once a month

Same reasons here. Used since v4 - it doesn't annoy you with constant popups or information. All I want my AV to do is warn me when serious and update in the background!
Has enough features in free to keep me happy.
The only one I'd ever pay for as a complement is Malwarebytes Antimalware. Although I keep threatening to buy it I never get round to it, which is stupid because a single licence supports 3 PC's for all of £18

Re: What security software do you use?
Windows Firewall + Avast Free + Malwarebytes Pro for me, very rarely have any issues. If I'm visiting any site I suspect could be dodgy I close out of it in my main browser and open it up in Sandboxie too. Never had any issues with this set up.
I used to use Norton until it got to the point where it was throwing around so many false positives it would probably even try to delete system32, at that point I got fed up and switched. It's idea of automatically quarantining lesser known files, while helpful to some, was downright disruptive also.

To reiterate this.
The best protection is to just generally not be in an idiot. To use an analogy, if you mess with the bulls you get the horns.

I'm with you, but still run MS Security Essentials (aka Windows Defender) as part of a belt-and-braces approach. Would you advocate going without security software full stop, maybe for performance reasons?

Oh, must certainly not. I run Avast and Malwarebytes, and I guess I think I still have Windows Defender on in the background, but I think I may have disabled it. The performance hit from 'lighter touch' antivirus software is a lot smaller than what it once used to be. Not very long ago a gaming session would be slowed to a crawl because Norton has decided to go ahead with its scheduled scan.
My point was that even the best armour has to have air gaps.
But since I don't browse through a lot of 'indecent' material I'm not running that the risk of picking up something. And that is probably the biggest threat.
If you open every single dodgy e-mail you get there will eventually be one your antivirus has not heard of before and something nasty will land on your computer. I never open e-mails that I'm not 100% sure of where they come from.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I only access the net on my DAW for updates - no cruising! As such I use MSE. Also use Malwarebytes.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I really like the last few years of norton releases. Fast and seems to block everything as well as can be expected.

Trouble I had with Norton is that in recent years I found it was simply blocking too much and so I dropped it 3 years ago now. In particular the safety network thing they set up, while a nice idea, was horribly troublesome. Any file that wasn't downloaded by the masses got instantly quarantined, this was particularly bothersome for game modifications, you could be downloading say the HD Textures for Deus Ex and it would just instantly quarantine the file. On top of that it was frequently blocking other files of mine which I knew were clean too.
It certainly does keep malware out, but I found it was causing far too much hassle on the inside for my liking. Not to mention the ludicrous RAM usage.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
MS and Malwarebytes , I like to stick to fairly lightweight programs.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I use Kaspersky internet security, consistently one of the best in terms of detecting viruses. However, I think sometimes it overreaches itself in terms of trying to monitor https connections and overriding windows settings/making sure they can't be tampered with. Still a very good program, not resource intensive and I've bought a 2 year license twice over the last 4 years.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Used Kaspersky too much in the last 2 jobs.........
Highest detection, apparently one of the least impact on PC performance.
The latter is highly debatable in non-lab conditions IMHO.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Used Norton and McAfee but very disappointed i both 1 is too slow and 1 too many bug so back to microsoft essentials security no price, easy to use and not take too much resources so its a win-win situations
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Avast, Spybot and Malwarebytes, free versions only. Used AVG at some distant point in the past, but it failed to stop a virus running amok on my system so I quickly ditched it. Avast has been perfect for around ~15yrs of usage. Wish it didn't have stuff like GrimeFighter et al, but I've just disabled those extras and kept the anti-virus portion.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
i use kaspersky and up until windows 10 never had an issue however windows defender now wont disable so may need to re plan
we use commodo a lot at work and i cant stand it, it seems to kill networked machines and cause more harm then good
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I like to say I'm a savvy surfer, so just use Windows 10 built in defender.
I remember 10 or so years ago, I bought a comprehensive Norton package. Norton IS 2006 I think. It come along with a restore package which done a scan on every boot. I got fed up of 30 minute boots after a few months. Those were the days - waiting for IS to do its stuff before being able to use your PC.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I've stopped using dedicated security software, as some posters have said the best method is prevention. dedicated security software just slows your pc down .
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Always been a user of Kaspersky. I've found it to be quite light on the system, never had an issue with it.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I cannot vote for some reason..But...
I used to be a kaspersky or Norton user until I moved to a new IT company that used ESET and since then I can say I have been highly impressed. Nod32 AV is pretty light and powerful, although the security sweet is abit too heavy for my liking.
But if Icouldnt pick ESET then it would have to be kaspersky, It has a great record and is nice and user friendly.
-

This thread was started two years ago! If you look at the original post you will see that it was started by Scan as a consumer survey.

Re: What security software do you use?
I use Bitdefender, I've found it to have excellent detection software rates with very few false positives (admittedly one involved it quarantining Steam.exe -_-), and it also slows down my computer far less than the Norton that I was using beforehand.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I'm testing out the new Norton Internet Security suite this time around on my windows 10 machine.
No problems at all to report - its not sapping anything from the CPU/memory - It has really low requirements now and is not taxing at all on my i5 2500K with 8 GB RAM.

Is it actually doing anything? ;)

Indeed it is :surprised:
I've checked the logs, its scanning away and updating itself when the systems not in use and at idle or whenever I'm watching a video etc on the PC.
I have tested with a few test downloads for triggering the antivirus, plus I've internally probed the hell out of my PC using Kali Linux and the firewall did its Job to good standard.
its nothing like the older versions which were problematic at times and I have no issues recommending this nowadays.

That's good to know actually, I may actually give it a go again when my subscription ends in a few months, if only because Bitdefender seems to insist on activating the less secure 'Game' profile whenever Steam runs, including it the background, and has no exclusion list to stop it from happening
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Thats the thing I like about it, If I'm planning to do some gaming, I just switch it to silent mode and just forget about it ;)
No noticeable FPS drop I can see as well, even when using 3D vision across the various titles I'm playing at the moment.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I've sworn by ESET's Nod32 since I began using it years ago. It's lightweight, does the job, and hasn't failed me once. If it'd have to pick an alternative, it'd probably be Kaspersky for its reputation.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
avira, its fast free and lightweight on your desktop and phone
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I found Bitdefender Total Security on sale and bought it. I also highly recommend Kaspersky.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Bitdefender often has some promotions when giving keys for half a year for free, I am using mine like that, but propably I will have to look for other new key, or pay for it and definetly I will not change it, I was using
avast not so good for me but if you using free vesrion it is the best what you can get
avg and nod horribly slowing computer
kaspersky was fine but not so great
bit defender i do not like the way the computer scans are orginzed in program but it is the best what you can currently get (at least for me :P
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I wanted to know if upgrading to Kaspersky/Bitdefender causes any system slowdowns. I am currently running Microsoft Defender and it\'s been alright so far. :shocked2:

Re: What security software do you use?

Re: What security software do you use?
Avast, Emisoft & Malwarebytes
-
Re: What security software do you use?
McAfee, because it\'s bundled with everything at Currys.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Bitdefender full suite for 3 pcs, but currently only have free avg on my laptop, but will be ugprading over weekend on that laptop as well
-

Microsoft Defender under Win 8.1. Don\'t need any more than that as long as you\'re not searching the darker corners of the web :p

I've used Kaspersky for years on mine and my family's PC's. However, I agree very much that there is no substitute for basic common sense when using the internet. Unfortunately my family seem to have very little... :censored:
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Have used Kaspersky for years and continue to do so as it's also free with my banking.

Norton. I have been using it since the late 80's and it has never failed me ~ unlike the McAfee I purchased for my first PC.

I use SSH with a ublic/private key pair for remote authentication to a server, ssl for e mail and occasionally team viewer for remote PC access. I still use trucrypt for some applications, andI take regular backups of my data, which is also on a RAID1 system.

Re: What security software do you use?
Bitdefender Total Security 2018. I used ESET NOD32 for donkeys years (about 15) but it just got too expensive. Bitdefender is right up there with the best in independent tests, covers all my family PCs, Android phones and tablets all in with the Family pack. Currently have 3 year licence, and 15 devices covered, very cost effective.
Like ESET, Bitdefender has a very small footprint and does not hog resources, unlike some other suites....

I tried Bitdefender for a while, but ran into issues. Firstly it messed with my vpn, which apparently is quite common with BD (but somewhat fixable in fully paid version). Secondly, it caused blue screens during Windows Backup, which again is a known issue (and not fixable via paid version). Not sure I could stand to pay them with those bugs present.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
I use MSE, but I also use Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware, plus Trend Micro Online, Hijack This, etc. occasionally, just to check. All are free and none have caused any problems, unlike many of the others mentioned here that I've trialled in the past. I regard Mcafee as malware.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
On my Windows 10 machines, I rely on the built-in Windows Defender. It's come a long way in recent years, and I'm happy with it.
On my Windows 7 machines, I use 360 Total Security, which is a good freebie, these machines are going soon though ;-)
I don't really have a problem with viruses and the like these days, sensible web surfing and email scrutiny is the key :-)

Windows Defender
Malwarebytes
That is all you need.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Iv always used Windows Defender have done since the Window 7 days. Has been great all this time. I also like to make sure everything is up to date but with some Windows updates things can get worse.
But overall Windows Defender has been perfect for me.
-
Re: What security software do you use?
Add me to the list of people that uses Windows Defender. A long while ago I used to use NOD32, but eventually got lazy (and cheap) and just started using Defender. So far I haven't been punished for it, but I don't doubt that other dedicated security sites remain better. I'd just need to do some reading up. :)

Re: What security software do you use?
