    Red face 3XS Graphite LG1716 (Clevo P370SM-A, 2x nVidia 880M, Intel i7 4810MQ)

    ( P370SM-A on www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/item.asp?procatalogID=4 )

Hi, I just wanted to say please feel free to take your time and it's no rush at all, I definitely do not need it in even close to the 4 days it suggests, within the next month or so is fine (or more, really!)

I remember I had a couple of minor problems before (I was naive and figured because I had been emailing back and forth to Philip he was the one that was making it and it ended up with a few things wonky etc) and had to send my Black Widow PC that I bought from you years ago (link) back when I got it (though was eventually great when it all got sorted out!) and it was a lot of hassle with DPD and all that (I looked through the thread and see it again and oh god, lol.)

If there's any way to make a laptop quieter I would pay for it for sure? Though yeah the temperatures in these summers lately might make good fans important I guess... I did google around for liquid cooled laptops but it seems limited to the realms of experimental science for the moment ( asetek.com/laptop.aspx or instructables.com/id/Watercooling-a-laptop-on-the-cheap), and plus from my experience so far it seems like water cooling is in fact more noisy than fans, so I dunno.

(I went for windows 7 again because windows 8 has a lot of compatibility problems with CMUD Pro which is a pretty amazing SSH/telnet client, and oh god Windows 7 has enough problems with old games already, gave up on trying to stop Tiberian Sun (not the multiplayer version) crashing to desktop after every 20-30 mins or so and never did get Omikron or Earthsiege 2 working, aww. May gog save us all.)

(forgot to say, for the order number I can PM if needed but this forum account is linked to my SCAN account if you can look at that [I didn't have the free postage because I haven't logged in a while I think, dunno.])

Not really relevent to the thread but noticed you mentioned you couldn't get TS working have you tried OpenRA?

    http://www.openra.net/

Its not a perfect copy by any means but is pretty close.

Development is progressing well on our Tiberian Sun mod, but it is still several months away from a release.
heh, aww. It's a shame, command & conquer gold (the windows 95 version, readme) doesn't have the crashing problem that Tiberian Sun has, even though it's even older.

Anyway, I found a review of a similar set up, and it kind of has some stuff that sounds quite worrying, it would be cool if SCAN are able to offset these problems though?
40 dB(A) during idle is definitely too high, some gaming notebooks like the Asus G750JH only reach this value under load. The temporary rpm increase is also annoying. It does not matter if you edit a text document, browse the web or watch a video: You will have to live with up to 48 dB(A).

It is not often that we see such bad fan control, which only focuses on the temperatures and completely ignores the noise development. 48-51 dB(A) during 3D applications and up to 55 dB(A) under maximum load are also not acceptable for every user.

Please do not misunderstand us: We know that gaming notebooks have to dissipate the heat. However, you can expect better from such a big cooling solution inside the P370SM-A – especially with light workloads. Other manufacturers do a better job (just compare the system noise of the Alienware 18).

I should probably repost my question just so it doesn't get missed!

    Hi Perfectionist,

Pretty sure the sounds are something you are going to have to live with sadly, its a Clevo design choice that can't easily be overcome by Scan the fans have to do a lot of work to cool such a powerful laptop in a 17" chassis. Their are plenty of mods available to get the temps down which in turn lower the sounds but i won't suggest them here as they will void your warranty.

I'd be happy to buy it with the mods if you want to mention them

    Re: 3XS Graphite LG1716 (Clevo P370SM-A, 2x nVidia 880M, Intel i7 4810MQ)

Hi, I was wondering is there a manual or anything for the case as I am getting extreme (dangerous sounding) fan whirring after boot up sometimes now and I'm wondering if after 5 yrs it probably needs to be opened up and the fan dusted, worried it might be clogged inside or something

nVidia Inspector shows the graphics card raises to 90+ degrees C on usage extremely fast, within 3 minutes or so, I've been reading around and apparently the 880M is known for being unstable and hot ("93C is max temp for this GPU. It will aggressively throttle once 93C is hit. Anything below 80C is fantastic for an 880M")("880m is a very crippled graphics. He can be very happy he can obtain 954mhz with his card. There isn't many 880m who can run 993mhz. Either fully throttling or heat problems or both. Mod vBios can't fix the throttle problem. This is by design. 880m shouldn't be sold.") so may not be an actual fault.

I looked up the manufacturer details (archive.today/2013.11.28-053929/http://clevo.com.tw/en/products/prodinfo_2.asp?productid=470) but neither they or Schenker-tech have consumer-facing info on it, Clevo have even removed from their site with no historical information given apparently (might be something to backup against in future), does Scan have any manual or anything on opening the case? Thank you
