RMA Found Not Faulty, However Issue Remains

    Hello,

I am posting here as I'm really not sure what to do now.

Back at the end of July I ordered several components from SCAN and built a system with specs as follows:

    Intel i7 920
    ASUS P6X58D-E Mobo
    Corsair 6GB
    Corsair Modular 850W
    Noctua NH-D14
    Ati HD5870

After a week or so of it working perfectly I ended up experiencing an intermittent "cold boot" issue where the motherboard would not POST. All fans would come on, but the red DRAM LED would either come on and remain on or not come on at all. There would be no further beeps and the only solution was to power off and on, perhaps several times before it would POST. Once the system was on it was rock solid and perfectly happy on restarts - the problem only occurred on power on after a shutdown.

After reading of several similar experiences on several forums with this board and similar ASUS boards I suspected it was to blame, although I couldn't be certain it wasn't a power issue.

I contacted ASUS who advised me to test it on a non-conductive surface with only motherboard, CPU+heatsink and PSU connected (no memory installed). The issue remained: sometimes the board gave no beeps, sometimes it gave the code for "no memory" as would be expected.

I sent back the board and PSU, but to my surprise they were found not faulty. I was informed the board had booted several times and the PSU voltages measured okay.

So I received the items back and ended up paying £41ish for the courier costs + testing.

However, since receiving the items back I have been experiencing exactly the same issue. I have now been trying to resolve this for several days, searching forums where I find many people with the same issue but no definitive solution. There are also many who don't have the issue so it's not clear what's going on. Auto settings do not help, manually setting voltages doesn't seem to help, same with memory settings. I had already tried resetting CMOS, but have also tried replacing battery to no avail.

Today it took 17 power off/on attempts for it to POST! It's very frustrating with the amount of time spent and no closer to a solution. I might get a few successful boots and think it's fixed, only for it to fail shortly afterwards.

Anyway I really don't know what to do. Although not very happy I am still considering living with it, but I am worried about the harm that constant power cycling might do to the other components, plus part of me feels I shouldn't have to put up with it in the first place.

I'm worried that if I send back the items again I'll just end up being charged another £41 and be no further forwards. At this point I'm considering just buying another board and be done with it!

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Gavin
