Which HSF & case for quiet Media PC ?

    Hi,

I've pretty much decided to build my own media PC, instead of buying a dedicated media streamer.

Several recommendation questions if you would be so kind ?

    Planning to go :
    LN15975 AMD X2 3800
    LN10405 Corsair 1GB RAM
as the combo, with my own HDDs & ODD.

    * Is there a suitable mobo with onboard VGA and DVI output ?

    * I *really* need this to be a silent as possible, so what would you recommend for a HSF and case inc PSU ?

I will probably use onboard VGA and internal PSU to start, and upgrade as cash becomes available. Really a shoestring operation to begin with !

    On the verge

    TIA,
    Cheers, David

The following motherboard Here supports AM2 and has both the DSUB and DVI connection upon it

As for the chassis - are you looking for a desktop/HTPC style chassis or just a normal one? Once we know this we can suggest cases and coolers.

    I hope this information helps.

    Best Regards,

Thanks Lee that MOBO looks good.

A small std case would be fine, low cost and silent is ideal

Thanks Grimley, that's one cool case !

I've reworked my list, bearing my cost limit in mind. I only have £200 right now, and would need a working PC with just that. I'm not likely to get much more in the immediate future, but longer term there would be scope for upgrading bits as I go.

I've checked out a few more MOBO options and found the Asrock is the lowest cost giving DVI gfx out, but is it stable enough ?

I already have DVD-RW & HDDs so - my current wants list :

    LN16634 Asrock ALiveNF6G-DVI £39.82
    LN15975 AM2 Athlon 64 3800+ Dual Core £61.79
    LN10405 1Gb (2X512Mb) Corsair Value RAM DDR2-667MHz £49.48
LN16745 Arctic Cooling Alpine 64 cpu hsf £5.86
    LN10206 Sweex Internet Optical, 600 dpi, PS2, 3 Buttons £2.34
    LN16583 Logitech Deluxe 250 Keyboard Black PS2 £6.45

    £166 ish.

Add a case & PSU... Would the
LN15434 Scan Colors IT 6003-C34 MicroATX Case Black with 350W PSU
be quiet enough for a Media PC ?
    Cheers, David

If you're on such a tight budget, do you really need a dual core CPU? Wouldn't a much cheaper single core meet your needs?

PS. Cheap PSUs that come with cases tend to be fairly noisy...

agreed, an X2 is a bit overkill for a media PC

my P4 ticks over nicely in my media PC
