How to check my maxtor hdd ?

I was told the best software to use but ive forgotten it, i have a sata maxtor and its started making wierd noises, i have tried downloading seatools and that doesnt work, tried WD Diagnostics and that doesnt work it just gives me the following error " cable test, read diagnostics error " i want to check to see if my hdd is dying on me before i lose all my data, helpppppp.
