Power supply problem

My venerable old Tagan 480W power supply finally gave up the ghost, so I looked through the Scan website to find a replacement.
I was looking for about 500W, with these connectors -
4 X Molex
1 X 4pin Motherboard
2 x 6pin PCI-E Power
1 X 8pin CPU
1 X floppy disk
4 X SATA


I found the Akasa 500W AK-P050FG8-BKUKV1 for £62.15 with -
6 x 4pin Molex
1 x 4pin Motherboard
2 x 6pin PCI-E Power
1 x 8pin CPU
1 x FDD Power
4 x SATA Power

Looked like a pretty good match to what I wanted, and with 2 spare Molex connectors over my requirements.

However, when it was delivered today, the connectors are actually -
6 x 4pin Molex
2 x 6pin PCI-E Power
1 x 8pin CPU
2 x FDD Power
4 x SATA Power
The 4pin Motherboard connection that my motherboard requires is missing.

This connection configuration looks like the one for the £52.75 AK-P050FG7-BKUKV1 500W Akasa, so either the PS I was sent was labelled wrongly, or the website has mixed up the details for the 2 power supplies.
In either case, the one I've received isn't any good for me, and isn't what I ordered.

Taken from Scans terms and conditions:

"We guarantee that the goods will correspond with the stated description and specification"

So this should easyily be sorted out for you. I would phone up and explain it will probably be sorted faster.

Also is the 8pin not detachble to make 2 seperate 4pins? Seems weird if there isn't.

What's the manufacturers code on the PSU? Which supply on Scan does it match?

The one I ordered and received was Man. Code AK-P050FG8-BKUKV1, Scan Code LN15637
However, the wiring loom matches the description of the AK-P050FG7-BKUKV1 Scan Code LN15627 i.e. 1 extra (un-needed) FDD connector, and missing the (needed) 4pin Motherboard connector.

Good idea, I'll call them in the morning. :)
It doesn't really matter if the 8pin splits or not, as my 680i MB needs the 8pin + a 4pin. The 4pin MB connector looks like a Molex in shape, but I don't know what voltage/configuration it uses. My old Tagan had this connector, and the plug was coloured blue.

According to the Akasa website both PSUs should have the same number of connectors except the G7 model has 2 floppy connectors.

I have a 680i board here on my desk. On checking the board there is an 8pin connector, 4 pin molex (for use with SLi) and 24pin connector. Normally the 8pin connector on your PSU splits into 2 4 pin power connectors. You would only need to connect either 1 half of the 8 pin connector or both parts joined, and also the 24 pin connector. Also the 4 pin molex can be added to supply extra power when using SLi.

I was concerned about the Molex-looking socket on the 680i MB, as the ECS manual states that it's:
"+5V, Ground, Ground, +1.2V."
Probably the "1.2V" is a misprint of 12V in the manual, but I wasn't about to risk damage by sticking a 12V plug in there :)
The Molex for the MB on my old Tagan looks more specialised than a normal one.

As you can see, it's blue, shielded, choked and marked VGA.

The G8 on the Scan Website has:
6 x 4pin Molex
1 x 4pin Motherboard
2 x 6pin PCI-E Power
1 x 8pin CPU
1 x FDD Power
4 x SATA Power

In reality the G8 has:
6 x 4pin Molex
2 x 6pin PCI-E Power
1 x 8pin (4pin + 4pin) ATX
2 x FDD Power
4 x SATA Power
In fact exactly the same configuration as the £10 cheaper G7, neither of which I'd have bought if the descriptions had been accurate.

Your old PSU probably harks back to the days when GFX cards had an additional standard molex connector on them as opposed to the PCI-e 6 pin connector. The fact it is blue & marked VGA probably ensures that it runs on a seperate rail from the CPU & mobo.

I agree with above - a standard molex from the new PSU will do just fine - it only supplies additional power for SLI mode when required. Indeed, it's not even mandatory to fit it with a single GFX card.

Edit: PS. The only incorrect thing in scan's description is the number of FDD connectors. There are no boards that require both an 8 pin & 4 pin mobo connection. The description as writted describes that it can support boards with the 8 pin standard or 4 pin standard (by splitting the 8-pin into two). I agree it's not 100% crystal clear, but if you're looking for someone to blame, then it's really whoever determines PSU standards and not a retailer. Over the last 2 years we gone from ATX 1.3 to ATX 2.0 to ATX 2.1 to ATX 2.2, not to mention BTX(!)

It's therefore not surprising that interpretation issues can occur.
