What you've got looks pretty good for most things at the moment - I'd recommend leaving it until later in the year when some new games start coming out that require a bit more. You'll undoubtedly get a bit more for your money then.
What's the native resolution of your Sony monitor?
1280x1024(i think)
Would the new ati card be any good.
I would like to spend money as it is a present. If i do not spend it my family will think of ways it can vanish.

With a monitor of that resolution, a 320mb card should be absoulutely fine.
This card is good for the price, if you have to spend the money now, get this and find something else to spend the extra £65 on - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=545050
Keep your money in your pocket, and try and avoid anything overclocked from stock.
8800 GTX a good choice if funds allow.

Guys- I know you mean well with your recommendations, but until such times as he actually needs DX10, spending on a new card whilst running at 1280 x 1024 would be a complete waste of cash.
His current card will cope admirably with pretty much everything on the market right now at that resolution.
scrandman please refer to post #6!

I'm in the same boat with an x1900xt too and have decided to wait a while longer to upgrade myself. Good luck with whatever you choose to do though!
8800gts or gtx - cant go wrong really!
Hide it someware the family will not find it
Failing that
you should get around that if you sold your x1900xt 512mb if you need to justify the over spend
EDIT: Actually if that money is really burning a hole in your pocket, how about a nice big 22" tft monitor instead![]()

I def recommend the 8800GTX. As it will future proof you for the next year, and if you need that extra power you can always get another one for SLI, by that time they will be cheaper than what they are currently (£320 Scan 8800GTX).
Yo Guys thanks for the advice.
If i go with 8800GTX
1. Has my psu sufficient power?
2. How much space is needed?
3. Will i need to buy any extra connectors?
4. How easy is it to change cards?

I would say your 550W should be ok...
The card is around 10 inches I think - it reaches the end of my motherboard (P5n32-e sli plus)
You need 2 x PCI-e power cables for it
