    XFX 8800GTX knackered

I'm getting graphical corruption at POST (coloured dots and lines). I can only get to desktop in safe mode but there are wavy lines across screen. I get a black screen/restart at Windows login in ordinary bootup mode. I've done a complete restore with Acronis true image to no avail. XFX tech support in US forum reckon it sounds like the card, and suggest I speak to retailer first.

I got this 3XS system in Dec 2006. What to do?

If you haven't already, check the leads, connections, then is the vga cooler is seated properly and the fan is operating? Just to eliminate the basics.

If you boot with a DOS disk or go into mobo BIOS screen, does it corrupt then? If not try uninstall driver and driver cleaner and re install driver in windows.

    Re: XFX 8800GTX knackered

I've pushed all the connectors. Fans are working. It's not heat as it happens from a cold start.

From the very first screen of BIOS info (or whatever it is that comes up first) there's a matrix of green dots in the background. The F8 screen (where you select safe mode), and the BIOS screen (after pressing delete) have a graphic symbol (2 vertical line above each other) spread throughout the text.

If I start-up normally, I get a mass of colours or a black screen, sometimes a restart. Safe mode normally works, but with patterns/wavy lines on the desktop etc.

Having done a complete restore with Acronis True image, the display drivers have been restored to the previous working state, surely? And anyway, safe mode uses the default windows display drivers, so it can't be that, surely?

    Re: XFX 8800GTX knackered

If it is only doing it with this particular graphics card, and all connections are okay. its a faulty card.

Drivers only have an affect with Windows, drivers DO NOT affect the BIOS or POST screens.

    Re: XFX 8800GTX knackered

booting with DOS disk or going into bios before windows loads means the vga is not using the windows drivers, just wanted to be sure its not driver related issues (thus saving an expensive NFF failed return!). It cerainly sounds not driver related, time to raise an RMA?

    Re: XFX 8800GTX knackered

Scan have asked me if I can check the power cables to the 8800GTX before an RMA.

Apparently, the 8800GTX can run in low power mode with just the 6 pin connector cable in the socket closest to the bottom of the card - which I've tried and still see graphical corruption. Are the cables interchangeable i.e. can I now just swop them over and try plugging the other cable into that socket to see if that cable is the problem? I can't see where they're coming from in the PSU.

Yes, I can! They're both 75W, 12V according to XFX support. And it wasn't the cables.

    Re: XFX 8800GTX knackered

Only other test you can do is try it in another PCI-E slot or another PC altogether if possible. Long shot but have you cleaned out the fan, it is unlikely as it is doing it from boot but it's worth a shot.
