To return or not to return? SATA hdd

My 250gb SATA hdd arrvived on Friday

    Invoice Number: <REMOVED FOR SECURITY>

It took FIVE hours to format.

Now, it takes 4 minutes (timed) to open the start menu, the PC is decent spec (2gb ddr2, dual core 2ghz etc).

Now, have I done something wrong, or is the Hdd screwed?

Should I return it, or are there tests I can run first?

    Cheers,
    Rich

First thing, check the SATA cable is plugged in securely at the HD and board ends and if it is try another cable.

My first WD SATA drive did similar when I first got it last year (it also got very hot) because the cable was not seated properly.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

I'd also recommend popping to the samsung website and downloading the tool to check the drive as well.

I did that and it's not downloadable (the iso doesn't download and the exe is in question marks instead of English) :S

Try scanning it with MHDD, it will show up any slow/bad sectors.

You can get it on the Ultimate Boot CD (which will also have the samsung tool) or Magic Boot Disk
