1.9v memory works on 1.8v motherboard?

    Hi,

    I just bought these:

    Mobo - ga-p35-s3 scan code LN18796

    and

    (2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-12) scan code LN11596

I'm just checking for compatability between the two.

My concern is that the motherboard has a 1.8v for memory but the memory is 1.9v.

Can I just up the voltage on the mobo to 1.9v? and everything will be OK?

    Thanks.

The Gigabyte should let you up the voltage no problem.

If you have issues with a default voltage of 1.8 preventing boot try it with just a single stick and head into the BIOS to up it, then install second.

corsair ram will boot at its default at normal voltage, then you need to manually set the timings, crank the voltage, save and reboot

Re: 1.9v memory works on 1.8v motherboard?

    Mmm,

so will the motherboard default to a 1.9v to match the ram voltage or will it boot at 1.8v and since the ram needs 1.9 volts not boot at all.

I just want to know if these two parts are compatible.

it will boot to the SPD value 1st time round (normally) 1.8v and bog standard jedec timings, then you need to put it to 1.9 and set the timings according to corsairs spec sheet.

from what i remember its done this way so you can boot a new install on its bios defaults, the ram would not run those timings stable at 1.8v hence the set it manual approach

Re: 1.9v memory works on 1.8v motherboard?

Ah ... I'm a complete noob here to building a PC.

So the ram will run slower with the 1.8v and the timings will be off. But once I set it to 1.9v and set the timings to the 5-5-12 then the ram will run at its default 800mhz?

almost there m8, the ram timings and FSB are not related in this.

put your helmet on , were talking cycles now !

Ok that wills give me something to digest ... but for now I'm happy the ram will work in the motherboard?
Sweet .. now where is that g0 Q6600 scan.

Thanks alot GoNzO I appreciate your help.

It would have been a nightmare if I had to send them back ... although luckily nothing has been opened .. still they may have said no.

its ok m8, that is half the fun with enthusiast parts

with that ram running faster than standard timings you need the extra voltage; voltage is a PC's petrol supply, the more you demand out of it the more power you need !

Re: 1.9v memory works on 1.8v motherboard?

    LOL..

I thought that the speed and timings were the at default ... I think I got it now.

I was just worried before as when I checked them out it said this.

On the motherboard it said memory 1.8v

    but

On the ram it says 1.9v

    Cheers
