Can anyone recommend a NAS box

I've currently got a Buffalo Link Station Pro and it isn't Vista compatible and I was less than impressed with Buffalo's response to duh I don't have a clue approach to it ever being Vista Compatable so it's going back to Amazon.

Can anyone recommend a NAS solution for around the £250 mark that will work with Vista and storage of say 500GB to 1TB.

    Cheers in advance

    Michael

One of the most popular ones at the present time has been the following item Here

However, I cannot say 100% if this would work with windows vista as not all of them have been tested by the manufacturers. What issue were you getting with vista as these are supposed to use TCP/IP connections and therefore be compatible with a wide range of operating systems.

    Best Regards,

Cheers Lee I'll have a look. My Linkstation won't see the shares normally. I have to use the FTP function to see them but then I can't write to the drive. I think the Linkstations are Linux based and I've read that Vista doesn't see Samba shares very well.

Vista has a heap of network issues. However, I've used Thecus units with XP/Vista/and OSX and all work fine... so if they have one which interests you?

Re: Can anyone recommend a NAS box

I have an old buffalo linkstation 120GB which does seem to work on a vista network, despite buffalo's webpage-but it's very, very slow. I recently replaced it with a qnap 109/109 pro which cost £190 plus the cost of a 750GB drive (£110) I literally had one lying on my desk unused!, a 500Gb drive is around £60-65.. The qnap drive is very good and will stream to just about anything. The 209 pro will raid 2 drives internally but the 109/pro has esata and usb sockets for an additional drive. Scan recently had all of these on "today only". PCW recently reviewed NAS and hexus have reviewed the 109 favourably

That Maxtor 1TB looks good, those sharable USB add on ports can be useful too, similar to the qnap above?

The printing port and the price were the Maxtor's selling points for me.

Um, I've got a Linkstation Pro 500Gb. Firmware 1.10 AFAIK.

I don't have problems with it working on Vista...........I can see shares no probs.

Got Itunes library on it and backups of various data from each of the PCs on the network.

I wonder if there are different revisions then. I using it under workgroup settings and the software under Vista sees the drive but comes up with an error message saying to check the connection status. When I've tried browsing to the IP it can't find it. I can't ping it either but I can see the shares through FTP which is useless as it won't allow me to write to the drives and viewing movies won't work throught the FTP. This is after I tried the patch from Buffalo. I'm gutted as I like the Linkstation Pro and it took me ages to get my shares just right and I had to spend a whole day copying the data back to send it back.

Re: Can anyone recommend a NAS box

Im using under workgroup settings also.

I can map network drives to it OR browse the network for it - to see the shares.

I can ping it and manage it though firefox browser.

This one was bought about 6 weeks ago.

If you want me to check anything else on the actual unit I could.

Sorry to hear it was a PITA
