Help!!! V. Slow internet on new PC

hello,

On my new 3xS system, with which I received a D-Link USB networking adapter, I am experiencing seriously slow connection speeds. Normall, I am at ~5 MBPS, on this PC, (connected to a wireless network), I'm getting 300KBPS.

Just to add, I'm getting 'poor' and sometimes less as the signal quality. Could it be a range issue?

Yeah, I would try and move your computer closer to the router and see if it makes a differenece.

Have you got the old adaptor you used to use in the same place? I assume you are referring to file transfers? You sure youre not getting bits & bytes confused if its for a net connection?

This is a totally new PC I placed upstairs (the router is downstairs). I've never used an adapter like this before, my laptop, which is the only other thing I have with wi-fi, has built in wireless capability.

I'm definetly not getting bits and bytes mixed up, and it doesn't matter as I'm using the same web-based test for both systems.

I have similar issues when I try and use wireless - the range for the USB adapters isnt always great and will depend on the environment the system is set up in, for example any walls that are between the router and wireless PC will degrade the signal slightly this varies from house to house, as previously stated it would be best if u can to try and move the router closer to the wireless USB adapter to increase the signal which then should provide better transfer speeds.

I find wireless is sensitive to position (and a foot can make a difference!)

Walls are thinner if you go through them at 90degrees rather than slanting.
microwaves / DECT phones can cause problems
Steel beams (RSJs etc) really don't help.

what sort of aerial are you using?

There are some fascinating / peculiar articles showing if you have a fixed location you can make some high power and very directional aerials from tin cans - though this might not be too clever or elegant for the laptop.

I guess the other thing to check if you are running one as 801.11b and the other as ...11g - a g only network is faster (though modern devices will almost certainly have g)

As advised by Speardane it could be numerous things limiting the signal and usually you will get a better signal if you can use an antenna with a better range obviously to do this you will have to go for a wireless PCI card rather than USB.

A know a few of my colleagues at Scan have had similar issues ( I basically got frustrated so cabled all mine with RJ45 cables) and have started using the homeplug systems rather than wireless with very good results

And is ur RAM at 800 or 1066?

Range, interference, native (ur favorite term!) aerial ability.

Can u analyse ur connection? see if its dropped packets, collisions or whats going on?

Seriously tho, if its an aerial/range problem there are some add on aerials or boosters that might help you.

I think I might have sorted it out.

The connector came with a sort of exension cable, and I used that to put the stick on the shelf next to my PC system. The reception only went up by 1-2 bars, yet I'm getting the full speed, with no problems now.

I can't believe a bit of PC casing and wood could get in the way so much.

Wireless sucks.

Setting up a cable is a bit of hassle, but well worth it IMO. Especially if you want a low latency connection and if there are a lot of other wireless routers sharing the airwaves with yours.

Ah, the joys of wireless networking

PC cases are designed to reduce or even prevent radio interference escaping from the PC, so it isn't a surprise that it would de a pretty good job of blocking your wireless signal too
