if I pre-order the x38 from scan, and the price suddenly drops on the day it's launched do I still pay the price it was when I pre-ordered it?
thanks

Are there any boards listed for pre-order yet?
Three, actually
Look at the 2 Asus boards above. Native DDR2 support

I personally wouldn't pre-order an X38 - I found only 1 website that has actually acquired a retail X38 (GIGABYTE X38-DQ6) for testing,
you'll be paying the full whack on prices until they're generally available, there's a spate of X38's due in October, in a variety of flavours
better to wait IMO.

I don't really see the need to get one of of the X38s over a P35 atm there isn't really that much of a increase unless you want the best out of benchmarks but even then it's only a small margin.
Dual 16-lane PCI Express slots for those with deep enough pockets, but I'm still not convinced until I see some proper testing, X38 v P35 .... the jury's still out!
The jury is already back in regarding board layout. It's the only reason I'm not on a P35 board right now.

ill just wait for actual stock to arrive
I'd go £150 max (and that's with a pained face). Then I'd have to have a serious rethink, or wait for prices to come down.

If I had £150 in my bin I'd go for the Blitz Formula, but I don't so it's all academic. From what I've read though there will be price drops on X38's but not for the initial releases. The most interesting aspect of X38 are the rumours that some are tweaked for better overclocking, I'm waiting to see if that's true, if they outperform the best P35's I may dive in. If they dont I'll stick with P35.
I had the P5K Deluxe in my hand but had to RMA it because the layout was just too restrictive for what I had in mind. So I pretty much know what I'm after (DDR2 version of the Asus P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP) and the chances of that coming in sub £150 are as likely as me going to the moon on a butterfly straight after my Sunday lunch right now. However, I'm hoping it slips in price within a relatively short time frame.

you may be in luck if your prepared to strech your budget a little .
ASUS P5E3 DELUXE DDR3 = £152.10 ex vat / £178.72 inc vat
ASUS P5E2 DELUXE DDR2 which will follows shortly after should be cheaper.
