Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
I have a Scan 8800gtx and I don't hear any noise - however, I haven't stuck my ear to it...
Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
if you have the case open and run a powerful game try it....... i thought it was the fan at first but its definately some sort of electrical noise which changes depending on the 3d activity level.......
Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
it could be the fan... just depends on the speed the fan is running at.
Try stopping the fan with your finger for a second and see if the noise goes away... if it does it is the fan.
Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
electrical noise under load or certain situations is normal, includes but not limited to the motherboard, PSU and GFX card
my R9800Pro many years back did this, but after a few weeks it went away, and my X1900XTX also does this under certain situations, not all devices do it, but its not particularly harmful just annoying perhaps.
I'm sure some will post "mine card made this noise and it died soon after"
edit - my 6800GT didn't make any electrical noise
Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
i have heard slight electrical noise, but this noise is quite loud........
sounds like this:-

its definately not the fan - i did the fan stopping thing
Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
Dont worry about it mate its normal, i,ve got two 8800GTXs and they both do it under load in games and benchmarks, and if you go to other forums like guru3d and xtremesystems they will tell you the same as me dont worry about it, its fine.

My X1900XT does this too, its a bit annoying and depending on who you speak to some will say its normal for cards to do this, some will say its totally abnormal and your PC is about to explode.
The pitch of my 'whine' changes on loading but is not always loudest at peak loads which is odd.
I have changed motherboard, PSU, RAM etc and the buzzing has always remained from the card. I just live with it now.
I do have crashes in Vista, with the ATI driver sometimes failing which seems to be worse if my PC has not been rebooted for days and days. I think personally its related to Vista and it not being 100% ironed out yet with drivers because XP is solid as a rock with the same hardware. I do prefer Vista as an OS though.
Maybe Vista SP2 will do the trick.

Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
That noise is not exclusive to graphics cards, I have an identical noise, I think it's coming from my mobo but it's hard to pinpoint. I will describe it .... It's an electrical noise, it changes pitch depending on the load, it's most notable at boot-up, and it sounds like demented mosquito having a hissy fit. Take a listen to spluff's first audio sample - (not the youtube one). The noise starts 16 seconds in and ends at 40 secs using Windows Media Player. That is identical to the noise I have. When I swapped out the mobo for an older backup mobo the noise completely disappeared. I don't think this noise is in any way NORMAL.
Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
JKL, that sounds odd indeed.
I think half the problem with these electrical type noises is it seems to be random which cards/components get them and also some people can't hear the pitch of the whine anyway so might never notice it. Also some PCs are not particularly quiet (mine is) anyway so its masked by something else.
My X1900XT has always done it, in fact my previous X1900XT which was RMA'd for some other issue did it too come to think of it, the card performs fine though so I begrudgingly lived with it. There are many forums with people moaning about 'whining' graphics cards and there seems to be no hard and fast definitive solution or proof that the card is failing (or will fail). I only get it in 3D games anyway and with those I have the sound cranked up, in windows its as quiet as a mouse.
Its been on two different motherboards, with 3 different PSUs.

Re: Scan 8800GTX and buzzing
same here - i only noticed it because i had my side door open and it only happens in 3d games, even the main menu it stayed quiet
