    HDD missing a molex connection?

I bought my computer through scan a couple of months ago, including a Western Digital HDD (LN17252) which comes with the 2 power connecterors(im guessing from the picture), sata power & the molex power. It arrived and i promptly plugged it into my PC using the sata power, not checking the molex connection seeing as i wasnt going to use it at the time. Now i just received a new PSU off a friend which comes with all the molex plugs i need, so when it came to the HDD i wanted to use the molex connection. Checking my HDD it doesnt have the molex connector, just an empty space where it should be. I checked your web site & the HDD i bought and in the picture it clearly shows it with the molex connection. Reading through the description, it also doesnt state anywhere about the power connector it comes with. Meaning the only thing you have to go off is the picture which as i said above, shows it with both power connectors.

Now i have a HDD which i cant readily use without making a complete hash of my cable management, something which is important as its a window'd case & one i do like to show off.

Am i just missing that molex power connector or does it not come with one?

    Thanks guys

That pic is of an IDE drive from what I cant tell and not SATA. SATA drives do not have molex connectors in my experience.

Re: HDD missing a molex connection?

WD were one of the few drvies to have dual connectors. Mine came with (250GB KS) but that was maybe almost a year ago.
Scan do a short molex-sata adapter cable for 59p but as i recall its not in the cables but in the drives section.

    edit:
Yep thats the one! Its about 170mm long and looks exactly like the picture

Re: HDD missing a molex connection?

generally SATA drives only come with a SATA power and data connection.

WD do have both SATA power and PATA power connection on some of their drives, but not all.

Re: HDD missing a molex connection?

Older SATA drives tend to come with both molex and SATA connections. New models dont include molex connections. I have a mixture in my PC's. Just use a molex to SATA adapter.

Re: HDD missing a molex connection?

bah, spose ill have 2 go for that 59p one. Was just hoping for a nice uniform cable layout.

    Thanks all the same.

edit: So is sata power taking over from molex connections then?

As for scan, maybe for future reference it would be usefull to include which connecter the HDD comes with in the description? As it stands there is no way of telling whether or not it comes with sata or molex & all your left to go off is the picture, which leads to my situation (abit with time wasted sending it back rather then being stuck with it like me).

Re: HDD missing a molex connection?

The sata power connector is taking over from molex for sata drives. It's supposed to be a newer connector but i've found them and the sata data connector to be lacking TBH.

I'll take this remark back as I received a Hitachi Deskstar Sata drive from Scan yesterday and that had both power connectors

You can't use the SATA hot-swapping ability without the new power connector being used

Re: HDD missing a molex connection?

If the Sata power are becoming mainstream for HDDs does that mean the rest of the PC bits will start using sata power aswell?

Surely it is much easier to use 1 power connecter for everything rather then have 2 just for the sake of hot swopping HDDs.
